I, and wife Renie, are animal lovers, predominantly dogs as extended family children but we occasionally had cats.

As our children grew and we all outlived our 4 legged family the larger breeds got replaced with smaller and smaller. We had rescued 2 Saint Bernard's at one time. Usually had pass around (Army deployment soldier need a good home for a family pet that is hard to take to some countries)  Labs, Shepards and a Dalmatians as we moved about the world for our Army careers.

Once retired, we fell in love with Boxers and Boston Terriers and stopped adopting other folks cast off pets preferring to find reputable breeders and bypass much veterinary grief and cost.

Later as children departed (each taking a dog away) and our careers were winding down, and it seemed like the Texas Micro Ranch would be our final home--- during all the remodeling we adapted much for our old age and OUR 4 legged family.

There is a point in a sec:

Last 20 years since Army retirement we have out lived several Boxers, and replaced with runt of the litter Bostons and French Bulldogs (fairly expensive from the better breeders). For the last 7 years we have Opie a 11 lb male Boston who's litter sister 5 lb Getti passed on, replaced by 31 lb Addi FM BT who grand-children can abuse and she just loves it.

Two years ago some butt head pitched a 10 YO 9 lb Chihuahua out the window at freeway speed and nearly killed her. Our small town shelter was looking at massive vet fees and asked for community help. My wife stepped up and this poor darling took a lot of care & $$$ to get healthy and back to enjoying life. We love our Miss Kitty ...named cuz we did not know her real name and she strutted about a lot like Matt Dillon's girl friend insisting the other dogs do has she insists.

WE learned a year ago of a French Bull dog litter in Oklahoma with a failed adoption of the runt defect brindle female we arranged to pay for and go get.  A breeder here in Texas we are/were on a waiting list with recommended us to the lady in OK. 19 lb Saphieri is now about to be a year old.

So the family is Renie and I plus Kitty, Opie, Addi, and Saphieri

Last week some stupid in Lampasas posted a Face Book notice looking for a home for a FREE French Bulldog male

Because the dog was defect, sick, not breed able, and the people suck, it languished for a few days when my wife asked if we could fit a 5th dog into the menagerie... I rolled my eyes as all 4 of my dogs love to help me sniff glue, drink whiskey & beer, and occasionally sand  or paint balsa things. But I agreed she could investigate and decide.

Renie arranged to meet the people and the dog only to find it a 11lb male named Angus was a complete wreck, scabbed up, manged, flea bitten/infested, no vet visits ever, emaciated, weak, starving, chained up in back yard, mean, and miserable.

Being a old skool Sergeant she immediately knew there was no point is discussing anything with the stupids and offered to take the dog right then. They did not want $$$ and Renie called our vet on the way away from the squaller.  Doc Moyer (Brad to us) did his thing, gave shots, heart worm positive test, prescribed regimen of care, feeding, and recovery. Next week we start the heart worm killing and long sedate recovery.

Initially Gus was very aggressive and combative with our family as they are all lovers and wanted to meet and play with him, but Renie and I have "been there done that" so many times it was just natural to control all of them, love each, and let Gus adapt over 3 days

So Gus, our name for the new addition, is on the mend, lost most of the mean and miserable in last 3 days, and now is under foot sniffing glue with me

Warm here so I have a door open but small window unit AC making the floor a nice place for them to lay, nap, dream, and nip at flys

I bet many of my CEF friends have shop hlepers

This is "Lucy".. inspecting Phred's Phault..

Lucy is a loner.. a whipped-cream junkie and definitely daddy's kitty. We adopted her and her two brothers (Linus and Charlie..) almost 4 years ago from an organization in Southern RI that captures/rescues feral cats, spades/neuters them and releases them back into the wild if homes cannot be found. This helps keep the feral cat population down. They were just 8 weeks old when we got them. Lucy had been previously placed in a home and returned because they could not handle her. It took weeks of working with her, before she stopped hissing and would let me approach her. She's a tough little girl though.. and barely tolerates her two larger brothers. She often smacks them in the face if they get too close to her comfort-zone. This usually ends up with fur flying and her screaming and pinned to the floor..  Shocked

These are her brothers.. inseparable.. "joined at the hip".. and if not for their weight-difference (Linus is about 2 lbs. heavier than Charlie) They're very hard to tell apart. My wife Lynne thinks that they may be mirror-twins.

I have a black cat that doesn't like other animals in the house, so we are a 1 cat house. He has given visiting dogs face fulls of claws. Protective as cats go, a "lover" but not a lap cat, and without a doubt my wife's cat. For a mere 9 pound cat he is very long, able to reach counters with his front paws while standing on the floor. Happily he is well trained against getting onto counters, and somewhat trained against tables.

This is "Spike" and the last of a long line.  I have become hyper sensitive to losing things that I love, so no more pets.

He's old, blind, my constant companion and must one day follow Kim, Sam, Oreo, Christy, Pup, Tin, Skittles, Puffer, and Smarty.  But, like me he's not used up yet.  He still chases a tennis ball searching it out by sound and smell, brings it back to me to repeat the process over and over.

We have had some wonderful pets, but Spike has been the best.

He went in to the vet with an ear infection two years ago and the vet prescribed him too high of a dose of medicine. He had to take it for a month and they said there would be side effects. 3 weeks in, he became really sick, we took him in to the University of Minn. emergency vet where they said he was in diabetic shock and his organs have begun to shutdown. They were shocked to see the dose they prescribed him, it was enough for a 75 pound dog. They told us the best thing to do is to put him down as he probably wouldn't make it through the night anyway. This was around the same time my grandpa passed away and my grandma was sick. The UofM reported the vet and said they would back us if we took legal action against the vet. A lawyer that we talked to said that we could proceed but expect a long and possibly costly fight as he's covered such cases before. Because of the situation we were already in, we just let it go...

I've been looking for another little dog. We've had miniature schnauzers before Charley and would like to find a little terrier.

I have found this thread quite moving. I had three dogs and three cats - all overlapping each other - different characters, different temperaments but all my family. the doggies made 12 to 17 and the cats 14 to 18.

I often think about them all but also remember the last visit to the vet with each one over the years.

I too swore that I would never have another but 8 years ago I arrived home and put my motorbike in the garage and noticed that the pannier was moving. I had been to work that day - it was -8 deg C on the way home, I had called at the filling station and filled up with petrol, followed by the supermarket.

When I looked in the pannier there was a little bundle of fluff together with a note, a bag of puppy food and a vets certificate. I couldn't read the note because the poor thing had messed herself.

I took her inside and cleaned her up and she wouldn't leave my side. The next day - I called the vet that had issued the certificate and he told me that she was one of a litter of six and gave me the details. I called the chap and he told me she had been bought by a young family only four days before but they had paid cash and he had no details.

I have no doubt that the family had got this little doggy with good intentions but couldn't cope - they had paid £300 for her. I soon found out why.

She had claws and teeth as sharp as razers at insisted on teething using my hands and fingers. Not biting -  I lost skin at a great rate even though she was incredibly gentle. As she climbed on my lap I ended up with multiple puncture wounds - this I only experience with my long departed cats when they were kittens.

As soon as SWTMBO saw her - there were no options and I haven't regretted it.

Unfortunately, she has also become a SWTMBO and demand affection. Also, as soon as I get my camera out - she waits for her picture to be taken.

Here I was taking pictures in the bungalow - next thing "What about me?"

I love all the family members past and present and fully understand how a past friend/companion can invoke the "never again" sentient

Long ago, as I was taught, it was my responsibility to send a few to the other side.... later we had a vet offer the do this as an ethical decision. Since then, when the decision time comes, I am glad my vet and I can both cry at the doing of the right thing.

I have often, as well as Renie, had such strong relationships with a "critter" to form the "never again" position...then along comes some poor abused critter and the Christian inside sez to take care of this helpless life, and we do

Renie and I were discussing this forum and thread yesterday and she reminded me that for last 31 years we have spent much more on "critter" health care than on our own health care..... by a large margin, and we both agreed...worth every penny

I've never understood why people mistreat animals but it appears to be rife and in the UK we have many TV programs showing this. I find it beyond belief that anyone can get a pet and wantanly neglect it.

Well done to anyone who has the courage to re home one and help it recover and adapt to a family life.

Shop helpers Empty As promised a photo or two of mending GUS the French Bull dog rescue

Post  fredvon4 Wed Jun 08, 2016 4:53 pm

I have many more photos of this poor sad sack but no sense in making all of you angry at the behavior of some humans

Earlier I had said Gus would be getting hospital to kill hear worm infestation... well the arsenic drug cocktail was back ordered and my vet just got it so Gus will have a two night stay next Monday and a long 6 week very sedate recovery. The problem with heart worm killing is they are actually in the heart and as they die decompose slowly potentially breaking apart and being blood clots to the brain...patient must be restrained and sedate...very hard to do with some super active breeds

Gus and I are slowly managing to learn about aggressiveness and respect for each of his siblings

Gus and our other FrenchBD Sapherie have become inseparable friends...the other dogs not some much....grin

Post  fredvon4 Tue Jun 14, 2016 11:23 am

Gus got the nasty Arsenic drug cocktail yesterday and in one hour we go get him--- and start the LONG six week ZERO ACTIVITY road to recovery

I spent the morning re-configuring a large multi panel dog pen, we had for RV traveling with the little critters, into two smaller pens for Gus.

One in Renie's shop, and one in mine. We already have a store bought crate in the main house for him

Meet Lilly

She will be 5 months old on Friday. I collected her on Monday - not "house trained" - but, then again, neither am I. Supposed to be a French Bulldog but she was the "runt" of the litter and undersized. I met her Mummy and two brothers - the brothers had found homes but no one wanted little Lilly. I couldn't resist.

Pedigree doesn't interest me - only really interested in knowing how big she will be.

She snores like a pig but is incredibly affectionate. She is slow to develop but ....... who cares! She has yet to meet her new Sister but they have "Skyped" each other. Don't know what they were saying but it sounded nice.

Shop helpers Dsc00121

She is small and like Poppy (see above) - loves posing for pictures. Her ears don't stick up like this naturally  - I posed her like this to look more like a French Bulldog. Her little teeth are razor sharp and she has shredded my slippers!

Shop helpers Dsc00122

Shop helpers Dsc00123

The family that raised her had done a nice job but were worried that they couldn't find a home for her. Puppies usually find homes after 8 weeks and before 15 weeks. After that, they are harder to re home. That is my excuse for another little doggy.

Your Sophie looks devious...I bet she can be a hand full some days....grin

Gus is not taking well to the treatment...2 weeks now and showing beginnings of kidney problems...so vet is trying the "slow" approach for second go at killing off the nasty heart worms

Renie and I have been through this--- and Gus is a fighter so outlook is hopefull
