New Improved Rusty Workshop!

Lots of y'all have seen my beat up old shop with it's rotten doors in pictures, and a fair number of you have witnessed it in real life. Some of you have seen it even before I had new wood under the eves replaced, evicting the squirrels. I gotta admit, I do like the multi-colored paint can purge art inside the doors, complete with my Blue Oyster Cult "Cross of Questioning."

Well, those doors have let mother nature come and go at will, along with my cat and who knows what else slithering in and out in the dead of night. This Sunday, my wife's brother called asking for pictures and dimensions, the same ones I've been showing various disappearing contractors for a couple of years now. So I e-mailed them to him. Yesterday, he called again saying he and his carpenter(on staff at his greenhouse farm) would be here this morning. Sure enough they rolled in from Greenville, SC with a truckload of tools and proceeded to demolish the old doors and frames, as well as the front window of the shop.

Holley stayed home from work, and I had a flying expedition set up, my first since H'ville last month. The guys started work, and I took off for the fort. I planned to meet Wayne to flight trim his e-P40 and re-test my Oriental's faulty engine behaviour that kept her grounded for the contest. I also have an untested old Cardinal that Watt gave me and wanted to see if it flew. It did. And its LA46 cranked without any complaint. The Oriental ran great. It was windy so I set it lean and Wayne flew it for 9 minutes till it cut off clean with an empty tank. I'm looking forward to when I can fly it again.

They did some seriously sturdy work. If the shop falls down, these will certainly still be standing. I neglected to get a picture of the new window framed up and sealed from the elements.
I better get to work and crank out some nice airplanes!

Rusty - them doors look like Ft Knox! It's a wonderful thing that your Brother in law custom fit them doors for you. From Roddies comments I'd assume you now have two new places to practice spray painting graffiti! Based on my experience with wooden doors, you should get a good coat of primer and one or two finish coats of good exterior paint on that bare wood ( especially the underside bottoms) if you don't want to have your new doors turn into your old doors in short order! Any un painted wood will absorb water like a sponge and turn into moldy mush in no time at all if left exposed to Mother Nature. Yup, they're look good for sure.

That's The BOMB man good looking doors and yeah the wood stove would be great if you have a suppler for the fuel , I am hoping to get some things done to my shop in and outside soon before the COLD sets in . I would like to be able to walk in with out turning sideways lol!

If I start building larger planes and I do plan to I am going to need the shop space to do this . Shucks its just became another storage space taker upper , it is good to have friends KIN that think of you and your needs . Eric Thumbs Up

Hey dudes, I'm glad y'all are giving them rave reviews.
Kari, I know it seemed sort of selfish for me to go fly while they were putting blood sweat and tears into my toy shop. I thought about it, but they knew ahead of time I had planned a trip. Randall, the carpenter swore he charged double if the homeowners helped, Lol. It was only for a couple of hours, and we played gopher for them for the rest of the day. They had little impact drills for the screws and she, the tool wife, had a great time driving screws into the wood. Boy, that virgin wood smells great! I had no idea a window frame could be cut out and fixed so easily. It would've taken me a week and looked like a ten year old did it.

Tomorrow morning we'll get paint and caulk and get started on that. I think we have good dry weather coming for a week, so it can have plenty of drying time.

Hey Rusty,

You've probably already thought about it, but a ventless propane heater might work well in your shop. I've got one hooked to a 40lb tank, and a recycled floor fan in the rafters that cycles the heat really well through the place. On the coldest days, it only takes 20 minutes or so to get things livable out there, and it cools off quickly when it's shut down. Also got a good smoke detector/carbon monoxide detector...which is a good accessory no matter what you use!

Aaawww ya got me! I think we'll be going with the traditional white caulk. Don't want to upset the neighbors and all. Hopefully we finish before game time. And that reminds me, our hometown 'Cocks will try to stuff the Florida Gators. Should see some feathers fly, however that works out.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch,
Kim, propane is a great idea. I've always meted out amperes like dangerous bits of treasure in this old building. Though it'll be a little less unnerving now that I know the wiring isn't damp, I think your alternate energy suggestion is marvelous. I will get the cubic footage tomorrow and look for possibilities. I don't suppose there's any solution that would safely allow me to leave the heat on low unattended. Like overnight. The place is mostly insulated with ancient stuffing, but its better than nothing. I hope I'll be pleasantly surprised at how much better it feels with the doors and window sealed. There is one more side window that needs sealing. I'll probably do what I did with the back two; knock off the wood sill protrusion on the outside and screw a sheet of Lexan over the whole window.

On the subject of power, I found something on one of our Lowes runs yesterday. We needed light, and so I figured I'd buy a couple more of the 500W halogen lamps that I used to use. They were out of the ones on tripods like I wanted, but I found a couple of 1700 Lumen LED flat panel lamps that throw an impressive flood of light for only about 26 watts. I'm thinking of switching all of my ailing 48" tubes out for these, at least as attrition allows. They could be mounted on the ceiling or on tripods, or on their own small portable stands.

My Brother-in Law is an awesome guy. A farmer by birth and a Nurseryman by trade. He owns one of the largest private greenhouse operations in South Carolina. Oh, and he's a pilot too, got a Cessna 182.

That's just an example, and sizes vary for different applications. Craigslist is where I would look. They can be found relatively cheap in used condition. Very efficient and a few logs will heat the shop for a whole day. It will pay for itself quickly. That little bit of wood you had by the fence would run that thing for a season.

Sorry Rusty, I didn't mean to say that you were selfish, because I don't think you were. What I was trying to say is that it's great to have friends and relatives and be in such terms with them that you can accept favors like that without feeling guilty.

Randall Has a point, and in the rare occasion when I get help (paid for or otherwise) with my home or shop improvement projects, it is very hard for me not to try and "help" lol!

They should just tell me to "go play with your airplanes DAMMIT!

Woooo, you get a Greenie for red paint! Looking good Rusty. It may not look like a lot, but if you're painting with a bum shoulder/arm it must seem like you painted the Hoover dam.

What's the "props in the window" signal? 3 if by air, 2 if by land, 1 nose in the dirt?
( IE: Paul Revere 1 if by land 2 if by sea).

Oh yeah, Holley painted the high stuff and I did the low stuff. It was still a lot of work though. I took frequent breaks. I was very careful not to overtax my shoulder, in fact I'm going to try flying tomorrow, starting with 1/2A planes.

The props in the window, no secret signals, just decorations.
