Acme Type F (F3) fuel tank
I'm fixing up an old 1/2 A Hell Razor. I'd like to use an Acme Type F (F3) fuel tank. Dimensions are 9/16" x 3/4" x 1 1/2". See here http://maplewebdesign.com/tanks
Anyone have a used or new one they would part with? or something very similar?
Thanks,
Darron

Brodak has some "perfect" clones...

I like the shape of that "F" tank, the bottom is round instead of a hard corner.

Thanks for the link, but I don't see one that is a match for the one I'm looking for....am I overlooking it?

I think Brodak lacks an exact match to what you want.

Sorry, Darron, I can't help with finding a tank. But I saw a sparkling clean Rebel Machine this summer at the beach that sounded like it drank a whole gallon of gas sitting next to me at the stop light. It's getting to be a rare thrill to see and hear a good old iron-block Detroit rod these days. I usually like my 300 hp Hyundai Santa Fe, but for a moment there I hated it Lol.

Is there a reason you need that particular tank? There are plenty of options that will fit the bill.

The kit instructions call for an Acme tank and this one appears to be the one referenced. There's not much room inside the body...I have seen a Perfect wedge tank that would work. Open to other era correct options.

Darron, I think a Perfect #17 might work. I've bought from Penn Valley Hobby Center before, both on and off E-Bay. They are good folk.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/PER17-Perfect-17-Long-Tiny-Wedge-Tank-Oz-Capacity-NOS-/351735900729
It seems to have a similar form factor to fit that slender fuselage. 0.25 oz. = 7.4 cc, a Golden Bee / Black Widow tank is 8 cc.
The Acme F3 tank is 0.1875 oz. = 5.5 cc, a Babe Bee tank is 5 cc.

That one would work...if I can't find the Acme tank then that is probably the one I will use. Thanks!

Re: Acme Type F (F3) fuel tank
The Acme tanks were all brass. They're horribly corroded inside . The flux was never cleaned out of them and it really degrades the
brass and solder typically leading to a total rebuild. They would state on the box " No tin plating to come loose and damage your engine". I wouldn't use anything but tinplate stock to build a tank. Brass and glow fuel don't get along well to begin with and the green death quickly forms in these tanks.

Good to know. I'm building it as a display model...actually resurrecting a well flown speed plane, so this one probably won't see the sky again....just wanted to use some period correct stuff.

Re: Acme Type F (F3) fuel tank
Brodak's #BH-516 is a 1/6oz. wedge that measures a slightly smaller 9/16"H x 3/4"W x 1-1/8"L.
It's likely a NOS "Perfect" #16 tank.. but that's just a guess. (it "does" have Perfect stamped in the end-cap..)

PVHC E-Bay 1/4 oz. Perfect #17 appears to be Brodak's BH-517, same cross section as 1/6 oz. Rod mentions but 1/2" longer. PVHC is the least expensive one. 1/6 oz = 4.9 cc.

I am hoping the negative rep points given to Ken were an accident. I see nothing wrong with his post that should warrant that.
Ken provides valuable info from real life experience. Sometimes it's not what we want to hear, but he is usually right on the mark.
Since the hellrazor won't ever fly have you just considered gluing a piece of copper tubing in the fill hole? From an outside appearance standpoint it would look the same.

That wasn't aimed at you, or anyone in particular, just wanted to point it out is all.
Hey, how about some pics of the plane? Those little speedsters look pretty cool. BTW I have a pretty good stash of Perfect tanks. If you find what size you need I may have it.

Not sure who negated Ken but it certainly wasn't me. I considered it an opinion from practical experience, something to watch for if they are considering that particular brand of fuel tank, which could be something to watch for with older galvanic corrosion prevention plated fuel tanks exposed to humidity in general.

Maybe we have an ACME tank fan (or even a spy ) in our midst.GallopingGhostler wrote:Cribbs74 wrote:I am hoping the negative rep points given to Ken were an accident. Greenie for Ken //offset that mystify one , he is very correct about the brass but, if your not going to fly it ? Why cant you just buy the one in the pic from Acme ? I have a few tanks myself but nothing like that F (F3)

The Acme website has a statement at the bottom that says they don't have tanks available anymore and are leaving the page up for reference to folks.
I went ahead a bought a Perfect #17....cheap enough. I'm quite a ways from installing the tank, so can always substitute the Acme if I come across one.
The little Hell Razor is in pretty sad shape right now, but it talked to me...the price was right....and I'll have a bit of fun working on it. I plan to make a take-off dolly as well, which will complete the display.
I appreciate everyone's input.

Why not just but the Acme tank? My first thought also, until I read the fine print on the bottom of the the web page:
"We do not have anymore tanks for sale.
Try Other websites for old inventory.
This page is maintained to give information to hobbyists and
you can still email to us with questions. "
I guess this is so you can "Build your own" tank..out of tin, not brass. Unless it's for display purposes!
Nice of them to keep the web page up for entertainment value only.

Re: Acme Type F (F3) fuel tank
Ken Cook gave me a lot of GREAT advice when I built my FIRST little hard-tank for my CEF Reed-Speed entry. I had never soldered tinplate previously. I used .008" tinplate and 1/8" copper tube. For me; it was very satisfying to build my own custom tank. Once I got the feel for it.. I built several.
Here's an idea for a dolly..
