Exhaust deflector question

I would say that the PO probably ran it that way. I've never gotten a definitive answer regarding something similar; the later flanged cap-style reed-retainer. Neither part is made of gasket material.




I'd say that an actual gasket is more to seal the "case" than the mating-surface. That said; I do recommend running a gasket against the case. Some people "deck" the case by lightly rubbing on super-fine (600+) grit paper on a plate of glass. This will smooth it out nice. I use an orbital-motion.. and only a few strokes on the paper.

It won't hurt to run a gasket with that deflector.

Well, I don't see how that stamped surface can mate with the crankcase better than the machined surface of a gasket-needing tank, so I'll use a gasket anyhoo - "belt & suspenders" if not necessary.

Add:
Pg 39 in the '77 Cox catalog shows an engine with deflector and a gasket.

Or a light coat of Permatex in lieu of a gasket.
