Not a big deal, especially to some of you racer types, but got to run my first Rossi engine tonight! This came with one of the Sig Busters I got in the Box o' Planes, and was castor-locked when I took it off the plane. It got a hot bath in antifreeze while I pulled the Super Tigre and two Foxes from the other planes.

The crock pot did it's magic and the Rossi came out loose and ready to rock. Flushed it with some alcohol, installed a new glow plug, and set it up on the stand with some 15% Sig. I decided to use the the 6 3/4 X ? prop that it came with. It took a little cranking, but it finally fired up with a mighty roar...or maybe more of a scream.

Just like the Conquest, there's something magical about these cool little engines.

Gonna tach it tomorrow when I have some daylight, AND maybe get the Super Tigre going too.

The Rossi .15 is still a competitive engine. I see there's a Don's fast fill tank on the nose of the plane as well. These had a rubber a cap for a pit bottle that was jammed into it.

I don't know that much about Rossi engines but the "look" of that 15 appeals to me. The MVVS 15s look very similar but what I do know is that the castings on the Rossi - although often rough looking - were produced from a very high grade silicon aluminium alloy and is one of the reasons they are not cheap engines.

You don't often see many for sale so they are obviously "keepers".

Novarossi was formed in 2005 by the son of the founder of Rossi engines and I was surprised to find that they are still manufacturing CL engines. I have seen horrendously expensive buggy and boat engines but the aircraft motors seem reasonably priced (well, for the UK anyway!)

Hey Rod,
They both had these shut-offs....activated by a secondary pushrod from the elevator pushrod on the blue plane, and a trip wire on the green one, also hooked to the elevator's pushrod.

I had seen the large tank fillers in photos before, but hadn't noticed the fuel cut-off devices....guess I ought to look back through some of my magazines. Maybe Ken will check in again with some facts on whether these were a requirement for a given class.

The Blue Buster's builder was REALLY into streamlining...to the point of enclosing the lead-outs and bellcrank inside the 'solid' wing.

The shutoffs are required because you have to refill during a heat. It's once or twice a race. Anyway, you activate the shutoff lever during flight by giving a sharp snap of up elevator which throws the shutoff lever. That's what I have seen in person.

I think it's scale goodyear.

And then the Super Tigre takes a turn Kind of a weird little engine: asymmetrical venturi, with fins on only the right side of the head. Guess it need a little more run time, as I only got around 16-17k, with it surging the whole time. May try another glow plug.

The venturi on the Tigre may be a little large. They usually have an insert that restricts it a little.

What you have there is a g-15 goodyear engine. It will run better on pressure as Ian alluded to. Or restrict the intake. It's an all out speed engine. Probably best on a 7x4 or a cut down 7x6

Almost if not all Super Tigres have an offset venturi.

Kim...I scored a Rossi .45 NIB engine at a swap meet for low buck a few years back and sold it unrun here on CEF....don't remember who scarfed it up

Probably the most refined design and machining I ever touched on a glow engine

Are you familiar with the various super fast (RC) Delta wing planes? Think Gremlin, I still have a Gremlin kit and planed the Rossi engine for it

however lost all RC interest and you know the rest of the story

I previously had seen several Rossi in RC pylon that were terribly fast ---even against purpose built Nelson engines (That seemed to dominate)

Venturi restrictors.... well of course for suction tanks ...but on a bladder..... you can NOT have too large an intake opening....grin

WX here is getting much better... need to fire a few engines (Just for fun) and plan a flying day

Tommy Schaefer of Garden State Circle Burners had a Jr Satan with the G-15 on it at vintage combat this past Sept. It was very impressive . He had a nice little carbon fiber prop on it and it was on case pressure. I would venture to say it was flying in the 90 mph range and doing it with authority. A nice combination.

I agree, something like a Nelson, Jett or Rossi or any high performance engine screaming at top RPM is a sight to behold, especially if you're familiar to the 'sport' version.
In the mid-nineties i ran a Rossi in 428 Q500 for 1/2 a season before i ponied up and got a Jett the RPM these guys would get was mind blowing, the comparisons of RPM on the pre-race needle setting among the racers is what lead to the Tach races!

I should also mention Kim you received some very desireable engines in that sale. Your $50 was money well spent. You may be able to find that venturi insert, they are grey and red. They may be different sizes, I don't have enough knowledge to speak to that.

The blue plane is a Falcon Special II . Also known as the "Lil" Rebel #10 . I built one back in the days when control line racing was popular. The Tigre needs pressure with out the venture insert to run proper . The Rossi is the power house of the two but the Tigre is a good runner also .Nice investment for the money you spent .

Thanks for all the replies and information guys! I'll try the Tigre again with a metal tank hooked up to it's the pressure tap in it's case, and maybe also try a bladder.

Kim, I never had a Tiger that didn't like vitamin N.Unfortunately, the G-21/35 likes to break the crankshaft. My G-21/ .29 isn't bashful and I give it a good dosing of 50% nitro. Lighten the load to a 7x3.5 and let it wind up. Cox fuel is sounding just about right in the 25%-35% nitro.
