Thermal Hopper with odd cylinder

Has anyone ever see one like this?

As far as the fins go on the engine they were made this way at the factory and I can only guess that these were early engines and the factory made them larger to get better cooling on the later engines. I had a total of three engines that had this same design. I have seen others in the past listed on ebay with this same design.

I am not an expert in the history of cox engines. I have not seen any like the one pictured as "factory original" if it were, why doesn't the picture of the engine in the instruction sheets look like the one for sale? Might be early factory "prototype" where they ground off the fins of the cylinder and glow head? But, I don't think so. IMHO.

My thought was if it was done at the factory the whole cylinder would be blackened, without the shiney ground down areas.

Yes we were winning bidder and the engine went super-low, probably because of the cylinder. We too believe that the fins were ground but, hey, for the price we paid we can replace the cylinder and head. Those engines typically list for $300 and sell quickly at that price.

This is a common mod done for speed plane applications. Weight reduction and better fitment in a cowl. Doubt it's NIB.

You are gonna have to find a new original head and cylinder to make your money back with the box and all the junk that it came with it shouldn't be hard. Finding the correct head and cylinder might be difficult, unfortunately you can't list it as NIB.

That depends on your interpretation of NIB New pieces Including Box, or new in package pieces NIPP. As always: Buyer Beware.

I've always thought NIB was "New In Box" so I guess I would be expecting just that. Doen't really matter, that's Bernies problem to work out Very Happy
