Sterling Fledgling
My son has taken a shine to RC, I am CL guy through and through, but I would like to spend time with him. I bought him a foam PT-17 at a swap meet and would like to fly with him. The only RC plane I would like to build is the large .35 fledgling. I am hoping to find a kit. I saw some plans on outer zone, but they are Sterling plans so not complete.
Just a shot in the dark to see if anyone has one.

Re: Sterling Fledgling

Not my first RC airplane Ron but my longest lasting. I built it at least 35 years ago and still have it. 4 channel Airtronics and Enya .29 power, an excellent flier and a great beginners aircraft. A recent picture. I bought new batteries and rehabed the engine a few months ago. It's ready to go.

Looking good Bob. I like the simplicity of the design, from what I read it makes an excellent trainer and is very rugged. I'll find one hopefully! I may even ask you some questions as I build.

Re: Sterling Fledgling
I built the Mini Fledgling some years ago and powered with a (sorry to Cox lovers!) Norvel .061.
Flew beautiful and for some years.
Unfortunately meet his demise when I took off trying to do a Snap Roll with low rates!!!

Thanks Eric,
Now I have to figure out how to reset my password for that site! I also happened upon a place that will laser cut a short kit for $62. Not sold on that yet, would rather find an old kit, the wood will be nicer though...

Don't do it!! I had to search my old email files to find my username and password. Ooh I got lost in all the new stuff over there I'd been ignoring. If your into DIY for the price of having 4 - $62 kits cut you can have your very own laser cutter:

Looks like more fun than my wife's Scan'ncut! But id have to learn CAD.

Dang it Marlesky
11.5" x 15" laser cutter for $225 is real intriguing
I note they do not specify balsa cutting...mostly intended for engraving and no real cut depth feature
BUT please do see my other off topic post as I will now be in search of Laser cutter once again...based on this price point you linked to
I am open to any and all opinions and thoughts ...but do it on the other thread so we don't drag Ron's RC plane search too far off topic
Speaking of... HEY Ron
I get what you want--- but ask this... Is this particular RC model the only option considered?
Or is the father and son RC flying experience more the goal
If the later, might I humbly suggest (assuming you have zero or limited RC flying experience) you get a Horizon Hobby Apprentice ARF Electric trainer.
I deliberately got a 60 sized Glow powered high wing ARF ( Balsa/Glow) Tower Hobby trainer to start my RC adventure.
The local club trainer suggested the electric foam ARF Apprentice as a starting RC trainer...I am glad they did... mostly indestructible and will fly hands off just fine while being just right weight and power to deal with modest wind
Just food for thought buddy

Fred,
It's more of a father/son thing, it's just if I have to fly RC then I want to fly one that I like! I can wait until I get what I want, I'm stubborn that way

Marley,
Thanks for looking out, I replied to your message in a quote, messed up and deleted my post and it deleted yours as well! I am very sorry about that. Even with my super special moderator powers, I couldn't fix it. I gave you a greenie for my mistake!

Good picture, Jose. You could crop that out and it would make a good forum avatar.

I have a Spektrum radio that I was given about 5 years ago. It's brand new, but already antiquated. It will work for my purposes.

Re: Sterling Fledgling
Yo Ron,
Fast Eddie at Lazer Works sells a 'Short Kit' of the Fledgling. You provide the straight stock, and the kit has all the shaped parts.
My Shark, Winder, and Little Traveler II (Q-Tee) were built from his kits.
He doesn't sell plans of all his kits, but may be able to help you find a set.

Doubt these will help much, but figured to include them from one of my plan books:

Ron , If you decide to get the short kit and build form plans which in my opinion would be the way to go no telling when a kit may come up .... Anyway if you don't have and need stuff like steerable front wheel assy. , tires ,landing gear , servo trays or just what ever... i have this stuff and would like to help you and your son get in the air this spring . Just let me know .Eric

Re: Sterling Fledgling
Well I called Lazer Works and ordered a kit. If Kim recommends them then they must be good, plus his Shark .15 is featured on their website. They certainly have a lot of nice kits.
So if anyone was looking out for me, you can stand down. I'll post the kit contents when it arrives so you can see the quality of it.
