Goldberg Swordsman
Any thoughts on this kit? I'm looking to build a small plane that is easy to travel with and I can fly in the city. I'd use a .020 Pee Wee for power.

Re: Goldberg Swordsman
Depends on what you expect the Swordsman to do. With an .020 it would fly but with an .049 it would be a nice stunt plane.

plane
Stuntman 23/ Jumping bean are better planes. Baby ringmaster is a good flyer to. RSM/ Brodak have a couple nice full stunt ships but need a strong TD .049/.051.

Dan:
Without question true however the question was about a Swordsman/.020 combo.
The original poster did not respond to my comment and question.

Re: Goldberg Swordsman
I'm a novice flyer, so the .020 is probably enough to start. Do you think it would have enough power for loops and basic stunts? I'd like to fly on "30 lines.

Re: Goldberg Swordsman
I'd go with an .049 running rich to gain confidence in your ability to fly. As you improve lean out the engine and enjoy the fun.

Re: Goldberg Swordsman
The .020 would fly the airplane ok, but you'd probably need a fair chunk of lead on the nose to get it balanced properly.

Re: Goldberg Swordsman
I just ordered a Swordsman. In the kit picture, it looks like a scaled down Stuntman 23. We'll see.
.020 TD will be interesting!

You initially asked for thoughts on a Swordsmand/.020 combo and you got them. It would be nice if you thanked us for providing them.

Yes it will, I would love too see how the plane comes out.

Re: Goldberg Swordsman
Kit arrived and it's a little gem! Brodak didn't re-engineer this one, so it has a plywood firewall and fairing blocks.
When using a Pee Wee, the instructions recommend wrapping solder around the crankcase snout to balance the plane. I intend to use a .020 TD. What do you guys think about hollowing out a couple of the fairing blocks in order to hide some weights?

I suppose it would work ok, if you intend to eventually switch over to a .049 then I would do something less permanent. Just a thought.

Sounds like a reasonable thing to do given that added weight in the nose is needed to balance the CG of the plane.
Did you get the TD .020 running yet?

Not the stuck one. Waiting until this weekend to disassemble it when I'm home. I'll be using another TD for this plane.

Re: Goldberg Swordsman
What you are adding in CG balance weight will only further inhibit the "Swordsman's" flight characteristics IMO. Sure an .049 weighs more but you won't need to add weight to make the plane balance properly.
More power at the same weight makes sense to me.
BTW, Golderberg kits come with pencil-lead (not solder) weigh to balance the CG.

Re: Goldberg Swordsman
In this case it is solder. From the plan: "If using a .020 engine, which is very light, the model may be tail heavy. Balance it correctly by wrapping lead electrical solder (no acid core) as shown. Hold the model at the CG point (1-1/8" from nose) and check balance."
.049 seems simplest after all. Thanks again, everyone!

Re: Goldberg Swordsman
Okay then,
Maybe go with something like a golden bee or a babe bee with extended tank.

Re: Goldberg Swordsman
My Dad built this one (1980's?) his 2nd... The 1st one was for me back in the 60's and had a beautiful black fuse/rudder and dark green wing/tail-plane. He flew it... I watched.
This one survives... although with substandard repairs to the wing and tail-plane.

Re: Goldberg Swordsman
I've always liked the Swordsman. It looks like a mini Stuntman. I don't have one and probably never will. It looks cool as all Goldberg models do. I just have a feeling it probably lacks stunting ability. OTOH it probably is a great little 1/2A trainer and mild stunter.
It's a nice model Roddie! Do you have the canopy still?

No Ron... but the Stuntman's canopy looks the same size, and I have one... "red paint trim"!!Cribbs74 wrote:I've always liked the Swordsman. It looks like a mini Stuntman. Re: Goldberg Swordsman
It'd be fun to mount a prod. reedie .049 engine/external 1/4 oz. wedge stunt tank on there. probably a perfect balance between the rated Pee-Wee .020 and Baby Bee .049. maybe 27ft. lines... I'm smiling:)
