Hello,

Interested in knowing if the crankshaft on a TD 049 be strong enough for dieselising.

Regards

Steve

Hi Steve & welcome.
Tee Dee cranks seems to be much stronger than the reed valve engines, so I would say you shouldn't have a problem. It has certainly been done before. I'm sure there are others here who've probably tried it and can give a more informed answer than me.

I've done it with Tee Dee's and Medallions. I have even used electric starters on them. They both run well as diesels and have never even been difficult, let alone had any problems as diesels.

Hey Steve, I see you are a local (to me) and I was figuring the "Tyro" reference may have been a nod to Taipan diesel engines. Want to fill us in a little on what brought you to our happy little group? What's your background in modeling etc?

Hi Rod,

You figured correctly, my username tyro185 is for the Taipan Tyro 1.85cc diesel. I'm a bit of are engine collector/restorer with some 400 units or so and probably half of these would be Burford engines. Started the hobby back in 1972 at age 10 flying control line and moving to RC when I started work in 1979, I consider myself an aeromodeller as I still fly both CL & RC, not just an RC'er as they say. I'm no longer a member of a model club for the past 4 years as I'm just not coping with the political garbage that goes on in clubs with members so I have been flying small RC electric foam models with a friend at a vacant field and it's been fun. The problem now is that I'm missing the noise, smell, oil & smoke from IC engines so I'm thinking 049 engines should be fine to fly at this field as I'm just worried as no club, no insurance if something goes wrong. The reason this thread is on dieselising is I'm very passionate for diesel engines as I basically grew up on them and I was also running a 10cc diesel in an RC model when I was a club member and also a 6.5cc diesel in an RC converted Playboy.

Many thanks

Steve.
