Field Box Essentials

Field Box Essentials
Hi all. So, since roddie had brought back a thread I started last year regarding field boxes, https://www.coxengineforum.com/t9663-show-off-your-field-box, he mentioned a couple of good things which prompted me to start this. What are the things one keeps in their field boxes? Essentials, necessities, luxuries, I would like to see them all. I will get to mine all tomorrow as two are still outside and I will have to look. roddie had a good list, and a few really good and important ones I had not even thought of. But I will leave that up to him if he would like me to re-post his list, or if he would like to post it. Anyways, let the fun begin.

Re: Field Box Essentials
I carry a flight box and a tackle-turned-tool box. Some tools and other odds and ends are duplicates in each, and I finally have both properly stocked so I don't have to rob from the shop to equip either box with any shop tools as I'm packing for an expedition. I also have a third item for the field; a flat-bottomed soft carrier for heavy and tall things like a gallon fuel can, roll of paper towels, sack of cloth towels, electric starter, large canister of assorted zipties, can of orange marker paint, notebook, scoresheets, rulebook, calculator, and a trash bag. If I'm going to a contest, the list gets a little ridiculous with soldering iron and extra quick repair materials and even more props than I carry in my flight box.
When I get to the field, I load the pockets of my cargo pants with a cross wrench, plastic hemostats(for anti-siphon)two glow igniters in separate pockets, chicken stick, small telescoping magnet, small notepad and ballpoint pen, and a stopwatch, all of which are in the same pocket every time. That's a carryover from my contest routine. And in a contest, I always remove the spinner from my plane unless it's a Higley acorn nut. And I always hang a good rag in my belt. You can use it to dry your hands, wipe off goo for your pit man's benefit, or smother a fire.
As for the flight and tool box stock, I'll let y'all start rolling with that stuff.

Holy s#!t Rusty! I'm gonna' have to add a calculator, pen and notepad to my tote! I just need to know what to calculate! (just kidding) The trash-bag made me chuckle a bit.. Of course; that would be for snot-rags.. and burger-wrappings.. and not for the unthinkable...
I love to think about the "ridiculous-gear" that one could bring along to the flying field. (see the other thread.. ) but seriously.. it's very easy in this day and age; to have most if not all the conveniences in your home-shop, right there at the field. It just depends on how much you're willing to pack-up.. and also how well thought-out your field-box is. Modern battery technology is AWESOME. A bank of Lithium cells can power an inverter for AC power if needed.. at a fraction of the weight of the old "heavy" lead-acid/lead-calcium accumulators. You can even install LED lighting into you field-box.. for those nights when the flying-activity ends.. and the sun goes down as you're shootin' the bull with your flying buddies. Switch-on the field-box lights.. and they'll illuminate the pit.. as well as guide a path back to the car. I may be dreaming this stuff up.. but these sort of things would be convenient.. and easy to configure.. with a little bit of electrical know-how.
Re: Field Box Essentials
I carry the bare bones minimum. I do keep a decent supply of fixing and repair tools not to mention parts supply with me. Those items stay in the truck. One thing I would like to add though is that having a digital camera or phone is important equally. Many times simple ideas can be borrowed and even pictures of pit boxes can be most helpful. You can utilize what you feel is the best options and morph it all into your own design. Ken

And this statement right here is what sparked my interest in starting this thread.

Yes, the weather does suck, even here. I was down in the US last week and the weather was very nice and enjoyable.
Come home to one nice day yesterday and now crap for the better part of the week.

Re: Field Box Essentials
The "car box" gets a mountain of cr... er.. stuff. It gets glue, 5 minute epoxy, and CA with kicker...but these never seem to be in the box when I need them. props, tape, markers, stooge whether I am going to use it or not... If I am flying at home, 1/2a shorter than 40 ft lines only, then I have everything already...sorta.
The battery charger goes in the car box. Now I have a pigtail to run the charger off the 7 round RV connector on the bumper!
The flight box that goes to the line has just the stuff I should need while out there. starter, fuel, ignitor, spare prop, glow plug.
If I am flying electric RC I carry even less... but those are all foamies anyways.
Phil
