Another recent acquisition was a K&B .35 Torpedo. I got it for a good price on the 'bay, but will know more as I clean it up and run it.

Noticed this has SPI.

Steel fin cylinder is properly installed, ports are in the right location.

First time I've seen a larger than A sized engine with SPI. Appears also that a small part of the piston skirt is chipped out. It has good compression. Screws are junk and need replacing. I was going to clean it up, but I think I'm going to reassemble and test run it first. I don't know if this is an earlier version may be and why SPI and no Green Head paint.

That looks like quite a lot of SPI...
Perhaps there should be a fiber gasket under the cylinder which is now missing?

Fiber under cylinder gasket is in place. For an engine physically twice the size of a .049, SPI proportionally seems about right, although I could be wrong. Will know more once I bench run it. It's got a serial number 23484. I wonder if this one could be an earliest non-green head edition.

If I remember correctly, the green head was added when K&B switched to the four-bolt backplate. I believe that is also when they adopted the tapered piston for quicker break-in. Perhaps the green paint came off when someone cleaned the head.

During those times some folks were making modifications to engines as rumors surfaced about increased performance. Someone may have ground off some of the piston bottom. Most of the guys I flew with back then used stock engines.

The serial number puts it in the middle of the 1954-1959 range and it is the first version engine.  Tim Dannels has a complete K&B collection and none of his 35s have SPI.  I have several of my own and none of them have SPI.  The head paint was probably removed;  the factory 35s were painted.  The piston was probably modified, not factory.  Maybe there was a larger piece broken from it and the owner trimmed it back?
