Help! HELP! Looking for a ARF R/C plane that uses a COX 049 or 020

Post  Deerej18 Mon Jun 05, 2017 2:19 pm

I have been into nitro planes for years, flying mainly with .50cc+ sized engines. Found my Cox 049 and 020 laying around with some new 5 gram servos... Any planes out there that would be good for this sort of setup? - I was looking at the hobbyking mini stick below but even with my ARF experience, im still weary about kits.

I made the mistake of buying one of the Hobby King kits once... Poor instructions written in Chinglish, poor wood quality, just a waste. As far as 1/2A ARF's go, good luck! The 1/2A community is just a bunch of old dinosaurs that refuse to die, me included. For an ARF you would be best off buying an ARF electric and adding your 049. If a kit were up your alley, I would buy a Ulmer Das Not Ugly from select hobbies. http://selecthobbies.com/kitdata.htm. Most of us 1/2A guys end up having to scratch build or buy laser cut short kits. The rest of the world has moved on to light weight foam electrics, but losers like me just can't seem to let go of the past!

Hi, if you feel like building from scratch, you can make this model.
This is a plane from the Svenson firm (Baronnet), I have modified the original size, structure and position ailerons.
I have made two one with Small Cox Logo 0.020 engine and the other with Small Cox Logo 0.049.
It's a nice project and it flies very well.

COX International sells 1/2A size plane kits for R/C use with 049 engines...I learnt how to build R/C planes on these birds and it was worth it..https://coxengines.ca/radio-control/

How about something like the GWS Slow Stick for your .020? The construction is open, so you may want to enclose the radio gear somehow to keep the oil residue away, maybe a small "tupperware" butter container or something would work as a radio and battery box?

There is also a whole bunch of different styrofoam electric pusher planes that could be converted to suit Cox engines. Not very vintage looking though.

You have flown big models, I suppose you are an experienced pilot, so how about a foamie warbird? Again, an electric foamie with about 3ft wingspan would be a reasonably easy and inexpensive candidate for glow conversion.

Building a plane from a kit is fun too, I recommend you try one. Something like the one you posted the link to. The parts are already cut, so the construction is rather straight forward.

A friend of mine has that model, I advise you to put an ENYA 09, it is very good.
If you place a 049 it is possible that you take it right and not over much power, as it has a large wing, it all depends on how you want it to fly.
On windy days, the 049 may cost you even more.
I would discard the 0.020 for this model you indicate.

Would a single 049 have enough power? If not I maybe able to somehow put 2 049's on there.

To place 2 units of the 0.049 would have to study how to place them and that the vibration does not affect the good performance of the model.
Note that the fuselage is a square carbon tube of about 10 mm x 10 mm. I do not think it's worth trying. If you have something already armed, then continue looking for a model suitable for a cox 049 and that way you will not waste time or money.

This is a simple model to build from scratch, for a Cox 0.020. It would be a beautiful project! Very Happy

Another great model to build. Keep in mind that you can also make them for 0.049, bringing the enlargement of the plane to an ideal measurement for the engine you want to use.
I have all these projects in mind, as time allows, I will try to build them! Thumbs Up

I know you are wary of building, as you can see everyone here is pushing you to build as there is not much out there in ARF form.

There is this though:

http://www.sigplanes.com/SIG-Rascal-EP-49-ARF_p_85.html

Now, this is an EP version, but if you you look at the same plane in kit version you will see it's also designed for .049-.074 power.

Too much plane for a little .049.

Might want to check this out.  https://store.flying-models.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=1169
This plane has a flat sheet wing, meaning just 1/4 balsa sheet.  The fuselage is as simply as it gets.  Although scratch built, it is so easy, it is close to ARF.

Also check out https://www.flitetest.com/articles/flite-test-tiny-trainer.
This is a quickie built out of foam from a Dollar Tree store.  I built several of these with cheap electric motors to get back into rc.  This is doable with a 049.  These are more or less disposable planes.  Watch the video, you can build one in an hour.

This has some potential.  http://www.towerhobbies.com/products/hacker/hkpa0500.html

Just some food for thought.

I have a cox foam airplane Cox made years ago, Cox RC Bee I think. all you need is the engine and radio.  I can send pictures when I get home. I am teaching a PC class for seniors.

It is just the plans! The wing is just two 1/4" thick by 3" wide sheets of balsa glued together. You will have to cover the wing with covering. The fuselage is just a couple of sheets of balsa, same with elevator and rudder. It is as easy to build as it gets. You can order the plan and buy the balsa. If you are interested I have the magazine article for the build of it.

You will need some decent flying skills to handle this beast. It would help it you had a programmable transmitter so that you can add lots of proportional to settle it down and make it more forgiving. I will see if I can get the article scanned this weekend.
