Cox GTP Nissan ratchet starter gear
After looking to purchase one on eBay for a very long time I finally found a gear that will work to make a ratchet starter gear used on the GTP Nissan and others. This part isn't even listed on the parts breakdown in the manual. Unobtanium.
I found a Modulus 1 12 tooth pinion that is close. The teeth are not as tall but it meshes with the zip ratchet.
The gear is hardened and a file would not touch it. I heated it a dull red with a torch to anneal it so I could turn it on the lathe.
After turning it down and boring the hole it works perfect.

The picture is rotated. The gear on the bottom is the one I made. The one that came with the GTP is on top.

Re: Cox GTP Nissan ratchet starter gear
Jason, that's some very nice work. Were you just looking through a "gears and Pully's" catalog to see if you could find something close to the unobtanium gear, or just playin "MacGyver" to get the starter working?

Re: Cox GTP Nissan ratchet starter gear
Basically eBay and google. I know mod .8 is 32 pitch and what my RC10GT uses for gears. This is smaller than the Cox ratchet gear pitch. Started looking for larger size gears and mod 1 seemed close. Found a 12 tooth with a long boss so the set screw would be machined off. After turning to size I filed the flat spots that drives the ratchet drum.
I had all the parts to make a spare GTP engine but the ratchet gear.
