My first flight report as a Congaree Flyer Empty My first flight report as a Congaree Flyer

Post  RknRusty Thu Aug 03, 2017 10:57 pm

Daaaang, it's been a long time since I had a day like today.
Wayne has taken a liking for late afternoon flying. I gotta say, it was a stunt paradise under the overcast sky. Probably about 88* at first, just enough to work up a healthy sweat, but not blinding you with salt in your eyes... ahhh, South Carolina with its summer Gulf breeze.

Ever since last October, it's like something's always been wrong. A deflicted elbow, or hip, or neck, or geezz gimme a freakin' break already! Not to be ungrateful, I did get 5 flights during a 4 week window of opportunity back in the May contest season. And I had a great time doing it with an old club Tutor. And won some stuff. But I Miss My Fun Flying! Yeah, my idea of fun flying is flying pattern after pattern. Some call it practice, but I don't concentrate hard enough all the time, I prefer to relax and save the intensity for contests. That's surely why I've been slow to conquer the pattern. I can live with that. I can dream about being great without buying the lottery ticket, Lol. Hope I'm not disappointing my wonderful fans... Ha! I kill me... (Alf; 1980something)

Okay, if I'm acting goofy it's because I'm high on life. This was a great flying expedition from 5:30 till dusk. A light steady soothing breeze blew straight off the flats and down the RC runway. This is at my new Congaree Flyers club field. With Fort Jax being such a PITA with security, it's still lovingly maintained. And vacant. I feel sad that it happened on my watch too, it's an old club. I got there first and a fellow was flying a big gasoline engined RC Extra, and flying it very well. He was doing some 3-d at first. But then after we chatted and Wayne arrived he flew while we were staging our CL planes. He watched and listened to the pattern details as Wayne and I each took a turn flying, and then he fired up the extra and flew an official RC pattern. That was a real treat to watch, and I told him so. Today's planes with their huge power to weight ratio can flat out bust some spectacular moves. Looks like I could strap a saddle on that Extra and he could fly me over to the Subway for a snack.

Wayne brought a sweet little Ringmaster with an LA.25. I doubt if there's a better sport .25 ever made. What a snappy plane, and he can fly a respectable pattern with it. I've never flown a Ringmaster 'cept the micro once. Sorry I'm lazy, the camera stayed in the car.

Ol' Tazz is lookin' good in the sunlight. I haven't flown it since I busted the wing last fall. Wayne flew it at Bob's, but I couldn't fly that day. And I was dubious about flying today. I was a little unsure if I could handle it, but what the hell, let's find out.  Tazz has a nice "tuned"  FP.40 and it gives a good classic stunt run. I played it conservatively on the first flight for both the aforementioned reasons, plus Wayne needed to get eyes on the wing upright and inverted. No more trim was needed, just a light flap tweak back at Bob's had leveled it both ways. And the engine was on song, we were off and flying. I had cringingly left the lanyard off in case I needed a relief pilot. I had made a radical handle adjustment, and will tell about the what and why later... My typing finger is cramping, Lol.

So loops and level flight, 8s, squares, triangles, all the 45* maneuvers flown right at 5 seconds. I did some screaming yankouts to check for hinging with no bad habits and rolled ol' Tazz in for a landing. Balance- adequate; hips- cooperating, everything else- likewise. Boy, it feels good to fly my own plane again.

Next turn, I topped off the tank with a full load. It cranked leaner but would still break. Waved it off and intended to see how much of a pattern I could fly. It broke 2 and never looked back! I don't know how fast it was moving, but we were clipping along pretty good. And damned if I didn't bust out a whole pattern without botching a stunt or even stumbling once. When I got to the hourglass, she was screaming and pulling like a horse... well if I survive that I like it fast for the OH8s. That's also my most likely stumble and it didn't happen. Flew out the clover and proceeded to fly a hundred twenty seven laps with it pulling like it was angry. I tried a lazy 8 and it almost walked me like a dog, so I gave that up and flew level and a few loops until it was almost dark... juuust kidding. It finally gave up. I jokingly asked Wayne if that was about 3 second laps. All he said is, "You looked really solid out there." He also said it looked like an Advanced level pattern... other than the overrun. I'm calling this expedition a success. I'd forgotten how good it feels to get out and do this. I remember now. 11 Weeks till Stuntersville. Can I keep my body working... no idea, but I'll take it when I get it and see where it goes.

I'll write about that handle adjustment later.

Great report and great time Rusty! Will miss the photos of Fort Jax soldiers holding maneuvers just outside your circle, but glad you've got a good new field to fly from!

Brother Rusty has been, and still is, a large influence helping me get past days of semi depression. Not bad mental issues...but rather just not being too jazzed about what ever project I am on.

When I read his failures and successes and know who he is, and the challenges life has forced him to deal with, I get mad at myself just a bit

Then old guy* Bob shows off some of his very cool projects

* love brother but you are one cool OLD dude and I hope to be as prolific as you in about 20 years.....grin

The Kim send travel reports and real world airplane stuff  that helps kindel memory or desire
Ron C is another who is still working his ass off but finds time to play airplane and even visit many CEF friends
and not meaning to leave anyone out there are several others who are quite prolific here on CEF
Ken Cook busts my chops all the time but does so in a way I am never offended and learn a bunch from his (a lot like my) more recent discovery... same age and I do plan to meet him and his son some day

I am extremely jealous of all the CEF guys who have great sites and family/ friends to play with

I find my self remembering Super Dave as I write this....not sure why, except some days I try NOT to be as grumpy and caustic as he could be

Where did Duke got off to....life I guess

OK back to Rusty.... I recently had that DAY too friend.... and although it was by my self, it jazzed me so much that your mention of the Brodak P40 forces me to get off ass and play Me Too with the build

Mostly, because a few short weeks from now I am certain you will do your usually great reporting on the maiden flight of the ARF Brodak P-40B-----and compare or write a lot about it vs Taz.... reminds me, I have two Fancherized Twisters to get going on some day

Has anyone heard how Ian is doing.... I fear all the eye trouble screwed up his most beautiful new shop set up and other life plans

When I was workin we use to say:
a bad day of fishing is better than a good day at the office.
Now, you've changed that to:
a good day of Flying....well, it just don't get any better than that!!
Thanks for the great report.

Phred.. good-write brother! Imagine all us CEF'ers being able to meet together.. if only for one perfect afternoon like Rusty experienced at Congaree.. each of us with our favorite airplane ready to fly! Bucket-list..

Ian and I exchange emails fairly often.. and it's been a while since he's replied to my last message.. although mine didn't solicit any topics requiring an immediate response. I've been wondering what's happening with him too.. and have thought about writing him for the last few days. For my birthday a few years ago.. Ian PM'd me and said he was sending me a freshly-rebuilt Cox Tee Dee .051.. and also a small Davies Charlton "diesel" engine. I was PSYCHED.. to say the least.

I waited patiently for the parcel to arrive from London, England to Woonsocket, RI and to my amazement.. these "six" engines were packed in the box...

My first flight report as a Congaree Flyer 2-14-110

I really haven't wanted to divulge this.. but it was an extremely generous gift from the man.. considering I've never had the pleasure of meeting him...

Roddie

Ian is indeed one of our beloved members I certainly hope is doing better...but I fear life delt him a bad hand, for now.... I have no earthly clue how I would act if my eyes were hosed
I think if him often, and always say a short prayer for him. Like just now
Very cool care package he sent.... I know no matter his future YOU will always cherish each of those gifts

What a great guy

Y'all are something else. I'm honored to be a part of all this. The inspiration goes both ways.
Thanks,

P.S. still feeling good today, no undue strains and aches. Hoping for a productive weekend in the shop. Think I'll go mount a motor and/or stab.

Y'all don't forget to watch my show some Friday or Monday night on the Stunt Hangar 'Tube channel. ~9:30- :45 EDT

Sure. Nothing has changed, Congaree is just more convenient to most people, so I'm going where the action is. It's mostly RC, many are former Jackson Flyers. My pass into Jax is good until January.

I want a set of bits like the one in your picture. Where(H.F. I presume) should I get a set and how much $ does it take for a light use outfit?

My first flight report as a Congaree Flyer Bits_d10

My employer of 20 years ago said if I bought the box.. he'd give me the drill-bits. The drills are just standard high-speed steel with a black-oxide coating.. nothing special. The box holds the standard 115 drills for machine-work.

Harbor Freight might have the set.. but I did a google-search for machinist drill bits and an ad came up for Home Depot with a set that looks identical to mine (same steel-box and black-oxide coated drills) for $104.00.

http://www.homedepot.com/p/Gyros-High-Speed-Steel-Black-Oxide-Drill-Bit-Set-115-Piece-45-31115/204614044?cm_mmc=Shopping%7cG%7cBase%7cPLA%7cD25T%7cPowerTools&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI9s2z9pvA1QIVSCSBCh1aJAkJEAQYBSABEgKCLfD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds&dclid=CJaC9_ubwNUCFQa2swodiawBOA

I'd say that's a pretty good deal. Some of the better hardware stores will stock the less common #1-60 and letter A-Z drills "singly", if you break or wear one of those out.

The #1-60 drills range in size from .040" to .228" in MUCH finer progressive-increments than fractional. I use them quite frequently when I need a hole with minimal clearance. The A-Z bits range from .234" to .413". Tap-drills often fall into the #/letter-drill sizes.. so they're really good to have on hand for tapping threads. You'll notice that my index and the Home Depot one have a handy reference for choosing the correct drill for commonly used taps.

I also maintain an old "fractional-only" set that I use around the house for general work.. and seldom (if ever) use the fractional drills in the bigger box.

I have a very large "every thing included"--- inch, lettered, and numbered. The drill bit kit is in a flat plastic holder with gold colored bits

I think HF but can't remember fer sure

Thought at the time, wow hundreds of bits from 1/2" to micro size for only $59!

POO grrrrr I still have to buy good bits as about half the kit bits are way too wobbly in my drill press and many not at all very sharp.... A case of cheap china crap

I think in the long haul you will be $$$ ahead if you just buy good individual bits that you use most often

Yes i am with Fred on the cheap Bits from HF Good sets are high $$ but worth it in the long run , i have a drill bit doctor that sharpens bits from 1/8 to 1/2 " or so 100 $ but does a good job . Been wondering about Ian myself , That's very Cool of him Roddie !! to send like you said a package to someone you never met !? This Site Rocks! I truly hope he will repair in time. Babe Bee .049

The big set is certainly more than I need on a regular basis, but when someone recommends a number-this or alpha-that, I'd like to be able to go to my box and get it, rather than just grab one that's acap. Besides, I just have a tool fetish that I managed to wrassle under control some time after my family needed my tool money more than I did, Lol.
Thanks. I'm going to set my sights on a smaller set of alphanumeric size bits.

Yea.. I saw that set on Amazon.. it was a lot more $ than the one from Home Depot. I'll agree; It's definitely a luxury to have the full sets of alpha-numeric bits if you're not a machinist. Some "tap-drills" in the sizes you know you might need are good to have on hand though.. like a #50 for the 2-56 tap, #43 for the 4-40, #36 for the 6-32.. Those would be fairly common sizes for modeling-use. I actually found a 5-40 tap and "die" at a local hardware store. The tap can be used to chase the threads in the Cox .049 cranks.. and the die can clean-up a buggered prop-screw. The tap-drill for a 5-40 incidentally is a #38.
