We had a similar eclipse crescent here in New Mexico. It looked like 30 minutes before sundown. I did a quick glance, just one quick look up to verify with my regular glasses on. Effect on the eyes was similar to the old days of photoflash bulbs. I can understand why they recommend eye protection. Just think, in 99 years I'll be able to see it again.
