Just received my little Fuji .05 from MECOA, and am gonna try to break it in tomorrow between working stints on the Buster and Ringmaster.

It's heavy little sucker or seems so (haven't weighed it yet), came with no instructions, and was listed as an ABN engine (aluminum, bronze, and nickle?).

I was wondering if you guys had some tips on the break-in of one of these little slugs. Jason said he owned one, and rather than PM him, I thought it might be a little interesting to post it here in case someone else here had also fallen prey to one of these engines.

Beautiful muffler. Then they stuck a car engine head on it....

I have a Fugi 099. I have not run it yet. I am surprised it did not come with instructions. I think there was some discussions on the Fuji 05 on RCU a while back. Is the same as a Toki .05 and a sportwerks .05 car engine. Also the Picco P Zero has some interchangable parts like the coonrod.

I purchased a Fuji .099 (i think Hobby Lobby) back in the eighties, great little engine, ran it on a Hobby Lobby Papillion and a All-Star bipe, Fuji engines have been around forever (50's) but never really popular?

There was some discussion about these about 4 years ago on RCU.

Seems that they are very heavy (110g?) and would only spin a 6x3 at about 15000rpm.
So more than twice the weight of a Norvel .049 and about the same power as an old (single transfer) Babe Bee. Even a Queen Bee would leave it in the dust in terms of power to weight ratio...

Yeah...figure I'll see what I can get out of it. Got to search a little more on the break-in procedure. Don't know whether to light it up and let'r rip, or work it in a like a Babe Bee.

It is an ABC (or ABN) engine, put on a small prop and run it slightly rich. No need to four-stroke or heat cycle it, just run it in gently in order for everything to wear in, such as the conrod bearings etc.

Thanks Kris !

With the Ringmaster painting on hold 'till some dryer weather shows up, I was able to get the Fugi on a stand and put in a couple of runs this morning before being chased inside by thunderstorms.

True to what Kris said, it peaked at around 13 or so on a gray 6-3 and without it's muffler. Of course, we got a little more running to do, so it may pick up a bit as we go. Sort of a pretty engine.

Generally, I believe ABN usually refers to aluminum piston and brass cylinder that's nickle plated. To it's benefit, it does have an air bleed carb. Like Kris said, it was hashed over in RCU some time back. Nice looking, but not a real stump puller.

Yeah...gonna see how it idles next. Probably just as well that it DOESN'T turn up too fast...considering the size of the hole I had to drill out in the hub to get the prop bolt to fit !

Look how thick the backplate is! They could shave some weight there and on the head. Does it use a glow plug or a Nelson/turbo type plug? Being that it is a car engine try a smaller prop. Car engines like to rev up. Maybe an APC 5.5x2.5 or a Cox grey 5x3. That carb is huge also. Maybe adapt a Cox TD RC05 carb to it to save some weight there.

Post  1/2A Nut Fri Nov 09, 2018 7:00 pm

Update on the Fuji engine:

The .05 car engine requires thinner airfoils / low weight props as the power
of the stock engine's ability is in it's top end rpm.

HQ Prop 4x4.5  / Idle 9.3k rpm  / 28,746 rpm / 122.4 mph pitch speed
.197hp / 147w / Tuned Pipe's MRP (mean reflective point) set at 8.8in / 31k rpm.
If at 32.5K unloaded 140 mph potential down wind awesome set up for a
.05 converted car engine short med/hot glow plug
30%  Nitro / 72F  room temp.

Test flight:

Best pass 36,747 rpm gives a 157 mph pitch speed from the HQ 4x4.5 prop
Per audio tach from brief bursts of rpm past camera within the apex of the pass.
Per Doppler wave analysis: 238 kmh / 148 mph best pass. Speed from down wind
shallow dives gets the rpm / speed up. Prop is a bit small into the wind or when
pushed in steady banking turns. Peak speed is brief average speeds lower.
Wing is 106 sq. in.

HQ 5x4.5 speed tip prop for best thrust / speed ratio.
Static 25,355 rpm / 17.63oz /108mph Pitch Speed / .33hp / 246w
32,079 rpm / 137 mph. (per prop calc) 2nd best was 31.8k

Alternative a APC 6x4N back cut and reduced dia. down to 5.5x4 for static thrust close to 21 oz.

It's a good thing 1/2A Nut isn't in S. California competing in 1/2A F/F. He'd mop up on 5 to 8 sec. engine run competition provided his planes had enough carbon fiber in them to keep from flying to pieces.

First of all my congratulations Kim for your new acquisition ... so my green for you.
It is always good to share experiences about engines and parts of aeromodelling, that contributes to the growth of the activity.
I would like to see a video of the progress of your engine, that would be great.
There are a lot of people here like Brad, who have experience and will surely add interesting facts.
The best of all is ... "we are in this together" and so we share it among friends! Beer Cheers

Sounds like the Fuji .05 is a very misunderstood engine for what it can produce, was meant for high speed and smaller props.

Regarding comments on other forums, yea, sometimes I wonder. Some of these other forums outside this forum have a life of their own with posters who express views that defy common sense. There was one who was putting a way oversized 9x6 prop on an Enya .09-IV TV and claimed to have good results with it. Shortly after, I added the poster to the bozo bin (ignore list) because it was fruitless to discuss.

Here, discussions are more civil.

On the Picco P Zero the crankshaft is the weak point. Someone was making custom cranks for these that could withstand the higher RPMs when they were piped and running high nitro. RCU had a good discussion on them a while back.

Thank you gents!   Thumbs Up
I wanted to encourage the use of the engine is the idea. Many had bought the engine
in the early days when it first came out only to abandon the use of them as traditional
props did not yield good results. Kris has done some good work on improving the engine
as well and may chime in with his results.

There are good use options without the need of a tuned pipe:

The stock muffler sounds great with it here is a test of whats possible using a pressure tap.
Small props are safe with the Picco if you can avoid boinking the engine in the ground during
landings. I have two custom made cranks for the engine now and results are better than stock.
Here is a stock engine being tested:

Picco P-0 .05 / .85cc  APC 4.2x4
26,570 rpm / 101mph static - Muffler from Mecoa Fuji engine.
AP .09 carb used. 25% nitro / castor / synthetic mix
Run up after 2.5oz break in time.

Here is a low weight alternative using a Sportwerkz car header I cut it right after the turn
to have the exhaust concentration go straight down works great with a pressure tap.
The bend helps to add a bit of back pressure for the tap and keeps the sound level reasonable
compared to open exhaust but is still a bit loud - not as bad as a open exhaust TD.

Sportswerks .05  / HQ Carbon mix 4x4.5 / 26,586 rpm static
8.15oz thrust / 113.3 mph / 116w NV set rich by 1/2 turn.
