I originally got this to replace the NightHawk for the "Cox Flight Contest" - It said 1/2A and I never thought to check the measurements. After Ron's little hint I realised it would not be suitable for my tiny flying site! 1/2A!!! It is enormous!

Waste not, want not!

I subscribed to a model aeroplane magazine and received a fuselage building jig as a gift. This was an opportune moment to give it a whirl.

It took longer to build the jig than the Hummer progress in this post.

SIG Hummer Sig_hu10

It is a start.

This Hummer is getting bigger - 1/2 A - this is why it isn't replacing the NightHawk.

This is it next to the KK Radian.

Looking good Ian. Let me know how it flies!

I have been afraid to fly mine after I crashed it back in '92

looks good, take it from experience and be sure to make it so you can tell right side up from wrong side at a distance. It's gonna be fairly fast so don't set it up for max RPM.

I had originally intended this to be for my RTP escapades but after Ron pointed out the size I abandoned that idea but didn't want to leave it in its box. I have seen a few videos of them in action and it would be far, far too fast for me in standard form an build. It is being "modded" - I hope it will end up as a "Sport" rather than a "Yank and Bank" pole racer.

I have never used this iron on covering before (Lightex) but I only bought two rolls, red and clear red. I do understand your comment - the Hummer has no definitive shape and, even at a short distance, it will be easy not to see which way up it is and further away, whether it is coming or going! Especially with my eye sight.

I will be finding out the stalling speed very quickly!

I have had quite a break from building the Hummer. Sidetracked with many things (apart from mass building - I like to build a few models at the same time).

I decided that I wanted to modify it so that it has a rudder and spent the usual 3 seconds mulling it over and then slicing the existing one with a knife. This has been made from the original rudder.

It is not far off being finished now.

Congrats, looks really nice!

First thing I thought of was a white sunburst pattern on top of wing, classic 80's!

What are you using for a power plant?

The aeroplane is a beauty but I was intrigued by the discs and thought " fly those?".

Then I saw "disc golf" - never come across it before - so I searched

So...a .15 to .35 equivalent (per recommended prop size) on an airplane meant for a TeeDee .049 or .051

Slightly overpowered there.Very Happy lol!

Good thing throttles don't need to get ramped up all the way.

You are perfectly correct! It is experimental but the combination was recommended to me by an expert when I said that I wanted to be able to fly it slowly! Mmmm!

We will have to wait and see. But I always remember large props on rubber powered planes turning slowly producing graceful flights. (Wishful thinking?)

yea...slowly Huh...

11.1V * 1200kv = 13,320RPM DAMMIT!

I hope you get good throttle range. lol!

you can try a 2s battery at 7.4v

7.4V * 1200kv = 8,800 rpm Popcorn

Is the wing spar mat'l. "as per plan"... or did you choose to use a stronger wood? (just curious)

I watched a guy "wring-out" an Ace "All-Star Bipe" with a .40 on it... He was an accomplished 3-D flyer, and at launch; the plane R.O.G. in about 20 ft. and went straight-up like a rocket! It was flying very well... "unlimited vertical"... spins... barrel-rolls... inside/outside loops... until both wings folded. Everyone at the field gasped as it tumbled to the ground. He probably would have had his hands full attempting to land, if he'd gotten the chance. It was a small field with tall trees around the perimeter. He would have had to approach final "hot"... and there simply wasn't enough runway for that. "S.T.O." rather than "S.T.O.L.".... It "did" have foam wings... and I can't remember if he reinforced them or not. Probably not, as he had built and flown it with the recommended .10/.15 engine size previously.

I know you'd never intentionally risk a model in this way... This was just a memory of my witnessing what happened to a "ridiculously" over-powered plane.

With the 3s RPM of 13k ish you could put a 6 or 7 inch diameter prop with a 3 or 4 pitch on it and problem solved. Electric doesn't really care if it is under-proped.

Ian, You're forgetting its gonna have to fly a lot faster with all that extra weight.
You might want to look at something like this:
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__6547__TURNIGY_2204_14T_19g_Outrunner.html and use a 450-850 mah, 2 cel

Thats a pretty cool disc golf video, but remember those guys making all those shots have been playing a long time and are really good.

I still have my All-Star bipe with a Fuji .099 (Hobby Shack) its got more power than it needs, i can't imagine how a .40 would even balance out.

That or a little bigger (less than 15A) 3s, 1000mAh and you can expect 10 minute flights..  Go with a 7 inch prop and it will be pretty light loading on the system.  You will have to fit the battery pretty far forward to balance due to the weight differences between the drive trains.

I don't like prop savers.  I find they are a pain in the rear, so I would up to a slightly larger motor and ditch the prop saver.  Shoot for 150W which will easily swing an 8 inch prop, and happily swing a 6 inch prop.

Turning an 8 inch prop at 13k rpm is fine (do not use a "slowfly" prop at these rpm's  they distort and beat air), so 1400kv is a good

Phil

edit
sub-50g motor. 1300mAh batteries are roughly 100g+a bit.
