Friend gave me Two Spark Ignition Engines -- Converted Empty Friend gave me Two Spark Ignition Engines -- Converted

A friend (M. Myers) gave me two spark ignition engines.
He is converting to electric motors for flying and asked me "if" I wanted them?
I said sure. I never tried to run any spark engines but it always thought they were cool?

Well what he sent me was two modified engines that he got from W. Schmidt ( in Kanas).
One is an Arden .099 and the other is a McCoy .098 -- modified for spark ignition.

They are nice looking engines.
I think I need to get an ignition set-up to make them run?
Larry Davidson might be able to help me out on getting electronic ignition?

Next would be the type of fuel to use? Mixture (content and percentages?)
Coleman lantern fuel and 80wt. oil?

How is the electric ignition hooked up to the engines and spark plug?

Little help here please? confused

The McCoy has a tag on it that has some instructions.
One side give the max RPM at 10,200 on an 8x4 prop --- tested January-29-2010

On the other side of the tag it has RPM (fuel - Gas), Rogers type twr(tmr)?
Keep it oiled!
Needle valve at 1-3/4 out and start and run position of the contact on the engine.

The Arden .099 has no instructions or hints of any kind?

Many of my club members run spark ignition. By no means am I a expert on this subject as I only run them on a bench. They fly them, service them, and know all the ins and outs. Floyd Carter might be the person that would help you. He's extremely knowledgeable on any spark ignition engine. He can be found on Stunthangar.  I recently began running sparkers  myself. I have a Larry Davidson setup myself. I personally wouldn't use the old methods as they can be very unreliable. In addition, Larry's being solid state shuts off so the coil isn't energized after the engine stops.  In addition, I use glow fuel when running spark ignition. It runs less on a tank than gas but I prefer it because it's also quieter. You could run gas as some of my members do because they feel it starts easier, I don't believe that as I have used both successfully. My club members that use gas is due to not worrying about the residue eating the paint.
Gasoline mix is 3:1. Many of them use Coleman fuel and a 2 stroke oil from Walmart which they claim works the best.

The traditional mix was 70w oil, for low performance engines such as yours, motor oil will suffice. Glow fuel though will work fine assuming you keep the castor content high. The Arden has a enclosed timer housing while the Mccoy doesn't. Personally, my experience is that if I was to run them, I would have Larry's setup. Reason being is that if the Arden starts pushing oil out the nose, it will contaminate the points in a few minutes of running whereas the Mccoy is open. The metallurgy of the Mccoy isn't spectacular. Open point timers will work just fine with a standard 3 volt system whereas the closed timers can benefit from a little higher. I use 3, 1.2 ni-cads on Larry's coil.

Most setups are typical and it's quite simple. This is the setup for Larry's coil. A older system would have a condenser which is slightly different but similar. I don't use the condenser but I'm certain a simple diagram could find out where to install it inline.

The coil has 5 wires from it, a red, a white and the high tension lead and two smaller gauge wires one being black and the other white. The high tension terminal is on the side of the coil and most high tension leads use a heavy gauge lead with cloth insulation and what looks like two small safety pins hooked to the ends without the catch. The wire usually has a piece of shrink tube which acts like a clasp, you slide the shrink tube back and the safety pin opens. One side goes to the plug, the other to the coil terminal.

The red wire goes to the + on the battery, the white wire goes to the -. The smaller black gauge wire goes to engine ground. The smaller white goes to the 2-56 nut on the point terminal for the points.

Thanks for the help Ken.
I also got a lot of help from SAM (Society of Antique Modelers) members (Larry Davidson is a member) on the ignition set up.
Got a few drawings of how to wire it up. Also got fuel mixes. One SAM member is shipping to me a quart of fuel.
Just have to pay for shipping of the fuel.

Contacted Davidson and purchased two ignition systems from him for the engines.
I've know Larry for about 30 years now. Nice guy.

Thanks!
