Mattel HotWheels - Page 3 Empty Austin Healey 3000

Post  roddie Tue Apr 21, 2020 9:11 pm

yea.. I've been collecting the $1 cars.. Laughing leaning more toward the Matchbox division as of late; because of their "scale-appearing" representations. "Hot Wheels" did that a few years back (2014 through 2017) with some GREAT cars from the "Big 3".. but they've long-since been bought-up.

Matchbox has offered two versions of the Austin Healey 3000 in the last few years.

The 1st I bought December 4, 2019

Mattel HotWheels - Page 3 Austin13

and one I bought just the other night..

Mattel HotWheels - Page 3 Austin14

I'm posting this largely because the Austin Healey 3000 Is one of my Uncle Vin's favorite sports cars!

My step father brought a surprlus Jeep home when he came back after WWII. Loved Jeeps from then on, but never owned one.

We even used it to plow a small field at one time and it did quite well. I think the gear train noise worried him, as we never used the Jeep for plowing again!

Being kids at the time my sister and I rode in the back of the Jeep, and those metal seats were hell on our tender butts! Rock roads were anything but smooth back then, and we lived 5 miles from the nearest paved highway.

Hey Bill and Joe, Smile I like Jeeps.. but I never owned one. I've only driven one once. An old girlfriend's Ex-husband use to let her take his. We went and picked it up one day.. and drove to a spot where she said; "OK.. now you drive".. It was an old cart-path somewhere in Northampton, MA (Florance actually..) which traversed a river-bed. The Jeep was a Wrangler.. probably an early 2000's model. Low range creeping.. while sittin' back chillin'.. driving through the woods. Brings back memories. Smile

Roddie,

We have similar taste in cars. I loved the Austin Healy's looks and saw several parked in the parking lots at Sembach AB Germany from 56 to 58.

My best friend ordered a Triumph TR-3 instead, but I forgave him when he let me drive it.

He separated after one hitch in the AF, but looked me up a year or so later in Denver, and married my wife's best friend the following year! He left the TR-3 with me when he was out of town a time or two.

I drove several of the WWII Military Jeeps while at Sembach AB, and they were a kick to drive through the pristine forests in Germany.

I would love to have one now, but it would not be the same with Automatic trans and power everything.

Probably as close as I'll get to owning one like yours. I was a huge MOPAR fan, back in the Richard Petty/#43 days of NASCAR when he was racing the Chargers. The new Chargers don't do too much for me.. (sedan.. ? Rolling Eyes ) but they've got plenty of muscle under the hood. I enjoy the MOPAR TV ads where they subliminally show a clip of tire-frying performance. For the guy who wants muscle-car performance; ya.. we've got that. (and they do)

I agree. My mom drives a Charger because it’s.....a mom car on the outside. The Challenger, to me, still embodies that muscle car spirit. It has been a ton of fun! The first cool car we’ve ever owned.

One of my recent splurges; these metal/metal premium/themed models are more expensive. I don't have many of them.. but this 1961 Chevy spoke to me.

Good memories there Roddie. My dad owned a 61 just like your Hot Wheels. His was red as well. I remember the car like yesterday. It had a 348 cu inch V-8 and it was a 3 speed car. It would roast the tires off. We went out one night to a shopping mall and when we came out someone had stolen it. He was devastated, I loved that car. The police found it, the engine was replaced with a real hunk of crap. He told me to get into the car one night and we drove it to this house and sold it to a older gentleman. The next car he bought was a 65 Galaxie XL 500.

Hi Ken, Nothing compares to the feeling of having something stolen from you. My family went through our share of that when I was a young boy. We lived in a very rural section of town where it was particularly easy to get away with stealing.. and not be seen or get caught. The scariest was having our home broken-into. We didn't have much of value.. but the little that we "did have" had been compromised. I've never stolen anything from anywhere or anyone. I know how your dad felt when that car was stolen.

Here's a photo from my archives of a full-size Chevy that might have looked similar to your dad's.

This is actually a 62 BelAir with (I think) a 409 V8

The Fury, Belvedere were all based on this body style. Some even made available with a 426. My buddy I grew up with had one of these. I remember one thing distinctively about the car which was the push button transmission on the left side of the steering wheel. His had a slant six.

roddie let me peek sheepishly out from under the rug and offer that in my opinion that is the ugliest design that Plymouth ever made and that before 1980 I owned more Plymouths than any other make.

Thankfully, for me in 1967 they came out with a beautiful design that I immediately bought and put in my garage.

The 383 Super Commando engine didn't hurt either.

Mattel HotWheels - Page 3 1965-p11

Actually 1962 wasn't a great design year for any of the big three.

I agree, styling is a bit off, but it was the beginning of the muscle car era and the drivetrains available were on point. So for me I think they look good!

Yeah, some of the drivetrains that Chrysler put in their products were just awesome.

But that 62 - Dodge and Plymouth concaved where it shouldn't have concaved and convexed where it shouldn't have convexed.

But for some reason I fell for the 60/62 Valiant, not that much different.  European grill maybe.
