Wanted Cox Mercedes Benz W-196 911 HELP!!! front axle spring

Post  Mudhen on Thu May 17, 2018 5:16 pm

Hi All,
I was restoring a Cox W-196 as a gift for a dear friend and ran into a snag. The front axle spring is broken.
I don't blame the seller because it is difficult to see and I didn't notice until the car was disassembled.
But now the project is on hold until I find another spring.
So, I decided to reach out here among the fellow hobbyists and see if anyone has the part available.
I will pay $100.00 dollars for the part, but
It MUST be new, unbroken, not faded, perfect, and mint. I won't bargain or haggle, MINT!
If I get the part and it's not mint, I will demand a refund. It's a lot to pay for something I don't need.
I can paypal the seller and also include shipping for next day air.
The part number is 6022. Please PM me if you can help. (btw my friend is 85 years old. I think he'll enjoy the car.)
Thank you for your time.
Now get back to flying stuff and engines.
This Site Rocks!

I just went through my Mercedes stuff and do not have that part. You gave me much help and tips when I assembled mine.
If you have a used part and want to swap for my new one I would be happy to help, as long as its not broken. Are there rights and lefts?
The only fee would be postage. I wouldn't bother me much have a used part as long as it was decent.
I will also keep an eye out for you part.
Thanks again for your help, I don't think my assembly would have gone well without it.

Absolutely Not!!! You put a lot of time and money into your restoration. I wouldn't feel right with you cannibalizing your model for this one.
No difference between left and right.

Much appreciated.

That cool-pool guy (his last name is Pool) is who I bought the complete Mercedes in parts from, everything was there except the proper muffler and luckily Bob sent me one.
That seller has had a lot of nice NIB Cox stuff for a while now but I think he is running out.
Maybe i'm the gent who bought the parts.
I just looked at the link, that me.

Thank you for the help.
I may have found a used set, but they'll need restoration. I have to wait and see.
I have dealt with Pool in the past, so if this set doesn't work out then maybe I'll give him a shout.
Hopefully, I can finish the project by the end of next week.
Thank you, again.

None of my ventures panned out.
So I wound up cannibalizing the axle springs from my NIB car.
Oh well. It was a gift and I'm sure he'll enjoy it.
In the mean time I'll just keep an eye out for spare parts.

Well, eventually my venture did pan out.
I was able to find the parts I needed and restore the model back to its factory fresh condition.
What a joy it was to send it to my friend, who responded via email,

"June 20, 2018
Dear Brian,
First, I want to thank you for the Mercedes model.  When I took it out of the box, I was gobsmacked.  It is spectacular!  It looks exactly like I intended it to look when I designed it."

My friend is Cole Williams. He designed the car for Roy Cox while employed as a product engineer, but didn't have one for himself. He is now 85. I asked if he would be willing to send me a picture of him holding the car. Once I receive it, I'll post it here.

Excellent work Mud!

I am glad you were able to source what you needed to complete the car.

I now understand why you gave it away, a very kind gesture to the very worthy new owner.

The Mercedes is the pinnacle of Cox cars. I’ll probably never own one, but luckily I can live vicariously through guys like you.

Again, excellent work!

Cole received his “favorite model” and finally sent me a picture of him with the W-196.
It is amazing to me that nearly 60 years after he developed the Mercedes he is alive and well enough to still enjoy it.
Not many of the Quonset hut folks remain. It is a pleasure for me to know him and provide a fine example of one of his many projects from L.M. Cox.
(I also sent him a new P-40 Flying Tiger, PT-19 Flight Trainer, and Li’l Stinker; all three were his designs.)

Really Cool Mud!

He looks as happy as a kid on Christmas morning! He looks very good for 85.

I bet he could tell some stories.

How is that three point Mercedes star attached? Pins through the body?

Yup, pin or pins thru the hood and melted from the backside. I think the rear view mirrors are to.

Thanks Rene, I guess that would make them hard to replace.

Wonder if it's possible to "rechrome" those parts?

Thanks for all the nice comments. Cole really does enjoy it.
Rear view mirrors, exhaust stacks, and hood ornament are melted in place.
The ornament pin has a “keyhole” shape and fits snug. If one did not want to melt it, it would still hold well.
As for the mirrors and exhaust, one can carefully glue them into place.
If you need to chrome parts, I strongly recommend:

http://www.chrometechusa.com/model-cars-and-collectibles.html

He does great work with about a four to six week turnaround.
