Jim Walker "Firebrand"...It Flys !!!!!
Back in August of this year, I started work on my Jim Walker "Firebrand" combat wing. It was kitted in the late 1960's, and the one I flew back then was powered by a Cox QZ .049 with muffler. The plane flew fairly slow, and I'm trying to recreate that "Slow Ride" from back in the day.
After a few months of parking on the Ready Line, the little foam plane finally got it's first flights on Sunday, and everything went pretty well. There was an off-and-on breeze breaking over the hill, so I left off the muffler band, used a 5-3 gray prop, and a Tee Dee head on the QZ to speed up the plane and help it get out of it's stooge.
The wind STILL slapped the light-weight control liner around quite a bit (downwind turbulence from my house), but it handled it well enough to log 5 flights, and got put away unscathed.
Now, to slow it down, AND find myself a human stooge to throw it, along with trying to get some decent video of it's flights.

Hey Kim! ... how good this experience.
I will be attentive to the video.
Unfortunately I can not fly UC as I did when I was 12 years old, at the moment I decompose in an incredible way, not only that I get dizzy but also that I can not recover easily, it takes me a few hours to return to normal.
Anyway it is beautiful to see that others do the UC and enjoy it, most UC models are all nostalgic, who has not seen these models hanging in a store and provoke that smile mixed with illusions and imagination! ??

Thank you Mauricio!!!
Yes, I consider myself very fortunate to be able to fly Control Line Planes...ESPECIALLY the smaller 1/2A types with their fast-turning circles.
Now that the first flights tests are done, I can concentrate on getting some video footage of it, and a couple other projects in flight.
Take Care, Friend, and Good Flying to You !!!

Needs a Golden Bee back end up front and cylinder set back to vertical to protect NV.

Yeah, it'll eventually have several engine/set up combinations bolted to it's nose. Right now, we're in "The Nostalgia Mode" !!!

Way to go Kim ! ! The plane looks good , that is a pretty thick wing , i would think it would bee stable in flight if set up right . You do get some really nice pics , bee looking for the video when the time is right .

Thanks Man! Back when my brother flew his, it did the most amazing slow loops I'd ever seen. Most of our planes zipped through loops so fast, you'd miss them if you blinked. Jerry's somewhat anemic QZ pulled the Firebrand so slow, I couldn't believe the plane didn't turn in on him...but it didn't...probably because of it's very light weight.
It was just a happy coincidence back then, that I'm trying to replicate.

Re: Jim Walker "Firebrand"...It Flys !!!!!
I meant to say Firebrand and Firebird (circa 1970) came quite some time after Big Otto (circa 1960). Jim Walker died (of a heart attack in his lawyer's office, of all places) in 1958. Sorry for the confusion.

That Fire Bee model is quite interesting though. (Bob Smurthwaite design)

Priced at $4.00 in 1970, the Firebird and Firebrand would be about $26.00 in today's Bernanke bills.

I've never heard of the Firebrand either. I think it's very photogenic in profile. Very nice!

Looks like the same bell crank used in the Fire Baby.
I do like that wing. Foam, easy build and enclosed lines.

Those little fishing clips on the bell crank are the kiss of death for many planes . Your plane looks great and I bet it flies great with that nice thick airfoil . What did you use to glue the foam and finish the plane ?

Very nice CL plane, congrats Kim and enjoy flying it..
BTW...How does a foamie resist nitro fuel? Any surface treatment/proofing necessary?

Lanier used to wrap their foam wings in plastic. Sort of like monokote but thicker.
