You People Are Costing Me Money !!!!! The Shrike Arrives!

Post  Kim on Thu Dec 20, 2018 12:16 pm

So, my first and only Cox Ground Vehicle has arrived---though several RTF's I own might equally qualify for that title.

The Shrike was the only Christmas Catalog car that caught my attention as a kid because of it's resemblance to the Bonneville Salt Flats cars of the 1960's, and the recent "Cars are the Stars" thread had given me ample excuse to get this pretty nice example.

Also got some stickers on order, and will eventually top it all off with an aluminum propeller guard.

I'm hoping it will run on 30 feet of spiderwire so I'll have a chance to enjoy a wider sweep than with the 15 foot lines.

Are you saying potential "lawn darts" Kim. Smile

That's a great looking TCar Kim, but it pales when shown by your JW Firebrand picture. Love the pic, so perfect in profile attitude.

I am trying to resist becoming a tether car guy, C/L airplanes to me are so much more entertaining. But with tether cars I don't get dizzy so they have an appeal.

Wish it wasn't so, I identify with Mauricio regarding control line, love it but the after affects are not pleasant. Wasn't always that way.

Have you got key chain cameras at the ready? One on the nose another pointing back at the tether.

Thanks Bob!

The comment about RTF ground vehicles was in reference to a few of my planes that require an extended ground run to finally lift into the air!

Yep---read my mind on the camera deal (though I'm predictable enough)...already did a "Test Fit" with a Go Pro "Sessions" camera and some gray foam, and it looks like we got a working set-up.

My "Ultimate Secret Plan"....I'm never able keep ultimate secret plans secret...is to get it to run on 35 foot lines, and see if I can get a PT-19 ground skimming in front or behind it...maybe for a sort-of Lincoln Beachy/Barney Oldfield Moment.

Got no idea how THAT will turn out !!!

Well, Shoot!  Just realized the Shrike runs in the opposite direction!!  Hmmmm....

The answer is simple...fly s plane, then hold the tether on the Shrike to unwind!

Hey Kim! ... that's a beautiful idea that will have you moving and very attentive to everything!
You will have to move like a squirrel! .... the car turning and your flying with the model, plus the video cameras, etc etc ... ufff it will be a fun time friend!

The photo shown here is beautiful ... what moments, how much adrenaline ... I imagine the expectators who lived it for the first time, live and direct, I think they would not sleep for several days with so much excitement !!
I like that picture, can you tell me / tell us something about her and those shows? ... thanks!

Hey Mauricio,

The photo is of a promotional "race" between race car driver Barney Oldfield and pilot Lincoln Beachey.

Back in the early days, they traveled America, staging races at horse racing tracks and fairs.

Yeah, mine too!  Until a few years ago, I didn't know they were also produced in yellow, and thought they first came around in the early/mid-1960's, but Warren's page shows them running from 1968-70.

Hello Kim, thanks for the information ... I started to investigate and meet these characters of the story Lincoln Beachey and Barney Oldfield ... really amazing everything they did together, I was surprised that Lincoln Beachey, lost his life so young, It is part of the risk that is played in situations like this.
Thanks Kim again, and keep some of the information, it's always good to know a little more.
I just want to leave here a photo of Lincoln ... that must have been indreible live and direct for the spectators !!! Clapping Clapping

That's a neat idea, Kim! Good luck on flying the PT-19 while not tripping on the "ground" wire. I want to see that one! My first RC car as a kid was the black Cox Shrike. It had a single channel radio with steering. Remind me to tell you the story of that one next time we meet up!

I shall...nothing like Tales of Daring Do !!!

For some reason (I'm assuming to try to keep right-handed kids on the OUTSIDE of the circle while starting the pusher engine), Cox set up the Shrike to run clockwise.  So, the first order of business is to get it going the opposite direction...just hope I don't screw up some Space/Time Continuum!

Ain't gonna be none of this 15 foot business...we're going 35' or going home!

And yes, there WILL be an additional video camera aimed at the center of the circle.  Luckily, my Golden Years have delivered me to a place where public humiliation is really not a big deal...

Interesting engineering problem.

Build a platform sturdy enough to support Kim's weight while having a rotating tether line under the platform. I don't see it happening unless the platform is small (see video of tether car guy climbing on a pole equipped platform while his car is rotating beneath him.)

But, remember the UK fellow's video of him flying a C/L model while using just a central pole....How about two pivots, one for the car, the other for the airplane?

Either way some relative speed (throttled) between the two should be established so it's not a run-away one over the other.

Other ideas?

Should be fun, nobody better than Kim to pull it off.

Well, what MAY make the video worth watching is that I intend to fly the PT while just stepping over the car's line as it comes around...AND try to get the speeds close to matching by trying different props on the two.

Gonna sneak over to Cairo Airport's asphalt ramp some evening after closing time so I'll have the place to myself!

My eyes are not what they once were, however is the green steering wheel present?  (as if it was really needed).

Nope...didn't think to look for it, but it, and the aluminum roll bar were not included.
