Does anyone have a testors 8000 for sale cheap? I am building a plane made for one and would like to do some testing.

Good god why a pipe bomb. With a tank no less. If I had one I’d send it to you. I had a few different versions of pipe bomb engines but gave them away.
I see these command a pretty good price new in box on ebay for reasons unknown.

Because they perform well, they are light and they offer a good alternative to a Cox. The 8000 isn't a pipe bomb because it has the nylon case, not the pot-metal case of the "Pipe Bomb". It's an unfortunate name to give the engine because it gives the impression that they may explode. They can break a rod or crank pin when pushed hard, as can an OK Cub, or even a Cox, as well as many other light-weight high rpm engines.
So I say, Why Not?
And, Phil, sorry, no I don't have a spare I'm willing to part with.

LOL. Nope. I tend to prefer something a bit more rare with less plastic.

One drawback to the RTF product engine is difficulty in mounting due to lack of bolting lugs, relying on designing a wedging / clamping mechanism of some sort. Wasn't it Roddie who came up with a custom mounting method for a CL aircraft?

In speaking of the 8000, the original subject of this thread, they mount the same as a Cox tanked engine- the integral fuel tank has the same mounting pattern. So does the Testors hovercraft engine, although it uses an external tank. The mount screws directly to a Bee mount making it just as easy to attach as a Cox. The RTF engines were a different story, requiring a bit of inventiveness, then again, this is the same story as the Cox RTF engines with the "postage stamp" back. We don't hear so much about them being slammed because they're hard to mount, but the poor old Testors cops a beating.

Hmmm... Actually, just what I need. If you're not going to bid on it, Phil, I will. Are you going to bid on it?

Rod,
I've done three planes for the molded case Testors Fly'em" plane engines. A LOT more work to mount securely than the postage stamp engines. Mainly because you can make a mount in a few minutes that will work with the postage stamp by using the case screws. The Testors Fly'em engines only have one case lug on the right side of the engine and nothing to hold the engine on the left side, so you essentially have to mold you own engine cocoon for them. Fun, but time consuming.

Don't have a photo where I mounted a Babe Bee on the CG Swordsman 18, but you're right, Cox tank Bees, Testors 8000 and OK Cub "A", not to mention a few others have same firewall bolt pattern.Oldenginerod wrote:In speaking of the 8000, the original subject of this thread, they mount the same as a Cox tanked engine- the integral fuel tank has the same mounting pattern. Considering this is a Cox Engine forum, it is not be hard to understand why Testors would be a poster child. The RTF engines were a different story, requiring a bit of inventiveness, then again, this is the same story as the Cox RTF engines with the "postage stamp" back. Thanks Kim, I did see that. I just wanted to confirm those performance figures for my self. I had not planned to use a 8000 on the plane.

You're welcome. I just acquired one of the pipe bomb engines from the Fly-Em series (no normal mounting lugs). It's complete, and looks to be in fair shape, and if you could use it for your testing, I'll shoot it your way for postage.
