That is really interesting. What I did in the past was carefully remove the retainer ring and take off the hole unit away from the crank case nose. I was so affraid that the spring would suddenly jump out.

Here’s a link to a short write-up I did a couple years ago about cleaning up a car engine. There’s some pictures of the recoil starter taken apart, mine is the wedge-and-roller type. Maybe it is useful to someone
