sig skyray rc conversion
hello, i purchased a sig skyray control liner kit today at a local hobby shop for $12.95, i am almost done building it and i was thinking of converting it to 2 channel rc (elevater, rudder) i want to use my cox .049 golden bee. i am confused on how to set it up for rc, and also is this conversion even possible, any suggestions are greatly appreciated

Re: sig skyray rc conversion
The problem with this is size. Control Line planes have larger motors compared to rc. A r plane for a cox engine ranges around the 40" mark. For CL it is around 20". If you were to try and rc it it would be fast and squirly. Very hard to control. I would keep it as a Cl. I have one that was wrecked before we got it and we restored it and it flies great. Decent trainer. Little touch.
P.S. Ask Indra or BermanBeez about this. At one point they had a lengthy conversation on this about whether it would work. Both settled on that it will not work.

Yes. It is a little touchy. Try your first flight running rich. Do you have a handle and lines?

Ok. That will be the first things you need to get. Cox sells dacron that is nice. They also have handles. Black hawk models also sells a thing of dacron with a wood handle. Also good for the beginner. I may have a handle with lines I could send you. No guarantees though.

Re: sig skyray rc conversion
RC on a skyray is just not going to happen without serious modification is just not going to happen.
The wing loading is far too great.
there is no airfoil to generate the lift it would need.
the tail moment is not enough.

Yeah...there just ain't enough airplane there. The larger one might fair better, but it's still not designed for R/C and might end up being a still-born project. ( I know ALL ABOUT those! )

Someone converted a NOBLER to r/c, and that's a .35 - .40 stunter, that doesn't mean that it's neccessarily a good idea!

It can be done. I enlarged the plans by 10% for this Veco/Dumas "Scout"...Joe Wagner's great 1/2A stunter. It flew OK, and I was doing it just to live out a dream I'd had, but it never REALLY became a friendly R/C plane. I flat-spun it into the ground when the coupled ailerons and rudder couldn't make it recover from an attempted lomchevac !!!!

Sure looks good!

Thanks Indra! I think Joe's Scout is one of the best-looking .049 stunters ever ! I may try this again at some point with the super-tiny radio stuff we have now.

yes 2 things it looks like it needs to me but the camera angle may be exaggerating this.Kim wrote:Thanks Indra! I think Joe's Scout is one of the best-looking .049 stunters ever ! I may try this again at some point with the super-tiny radio stuff we have now.
It still appears a CL model.
I would do a longer fus with extended nose.
Re: sig skyray rc conversion
Yeah, but that was the point...if I'd changed it much...then it wouldn't have still been my "Scout". Better just to stick a bellcrank in the rascal, and hook some strings to it.

Re: sig skyray rc conversion
I had read something on rcgroups where a guy had converted his PT-19 RTF plastic CL model into RC. He said it was very fast till it ran out of fuel, then it just fell.

That sounds right.
Re: sig skyray rc conversion
Who in the hell was that!
That is a crazy thing to do lol considering how they flew as CL models!
