Ok...pretty it ain't!
I'm experimenting with Titebond II on this one. My hope is the aliphatic glue will keep this high-power beast together for 15 laps. No where did I read a requirement to land and attempt a second flight!
I plan on cutting my .015" lines down to 42' to meet that requirement...and to minimize line weight between me and that stub of a wing!

Hi Jim! That's a RADICAL piece of model aeronautical engineering if I do say so! What the heck is the name of that model? I realize that you're scaling the design down quite a bit.. for 1/2-A..
NOTE!! I believe that the latest CEF Speed-Contest line-length requirement is 35 feet. That's a LOT EASIER to accomplish with a 1/2A speed-model, than the previous 42 feet length. Ask the question Jim... I'm planning on flying my models on 35 foot lines.

Ok...Cat is out of the bag. I took the Super Bat plans from eBay just for the outlines. I'm not into speed, but figured my Mosquito slabby flew well enough, so maybe this could too.
And I'll need all of 42' since I plan on JATO launch. The real stretch, and most probable reason for getting disqualified is the Medallion!

Oh, and I'm trying to do this on one 4"x36" piece of 1/4" balsa plus whatever scraps I have in the left-overs box. That .15 is going to be heavy! At least the rock on the string might have directional control for a few laps.
I'm planning on a balloon tank right behind the engine. Ribs as shown in the plans will be thicker, and just to keep the wing from folding up since there is no real leading edge...especially with the engine set into the wing.

jim....roundy roundy...no outside loops or reverse wing over ---unless un intentional....grin
point is--- if you fold a wing in very level flight... it was weak front to rear.... not thickness or spars

Thanks Fred,
My concern is the grain is parallel to the "leading edge," while there will be that huge cutout for the engine. I expect the "ribs" will help keep the wing flat. I won't be skinning this with anything but paint. I plan on ONE flight for record, and test.
And I'm thinking no paint either...again, one flight for record. More pics tonight.

That is looking good and fast just sitting there. However, I disagree with the proposed line lengths. I personally would like to see that model on 25' lines....

I was wondering how long before that was caught!
Evil Grin!
25' lines? I have to make at least 10 laps, right?
Vomit!

Oh, and quick CG check for the parts shown....right on the engine cylinder! I may need to move the engine forward just a smidge. Bwahahaha!

Marley, if you are going to show me up with THAT, you HAVE to start your own thread!
I dare you to hang on for the run.

Oh man, 944 Jim, my apologies. I didn’t realize I was jumping in, or stepping on your build log, I’m sorry for cluttering up your Thread. I just found those pictures and had to post ‘em.
This is not my plane/rocket. It belongs to a member here, but is shown on a Collector facebook page. I sent a message inquiring if he was building it for Fun, or as a entry in the Speed Contest. Im waiting for his response. Meanwhile this is for Rod:
Sorry, I’ll try not to do it again...

Marley,
No harm, no foul! Or should we say fowl?
No apologies necessary! I hoped the LOL-thingy showed up clearly when I posted.
At least until you showed the rest of the SR-71...Now jealous, mad, and in a bad mood! (Big chuckles)
That is one sweet model, and I hope to see it fly. I think Orin Humphries in the Northwest flies one...I know someone related to Flying lines.org does. But I thought it was a profile model.
I'd love to know how the rocket gets ignited, and the model launched.
Thanks for sharing the details.

Remember Jim, when we get through with this Fly what you brung thing, we still have a Lockheed Electra build-off.

Bob, and anyone interested in the L-10...I traced the parts to a PDF. I still need to process the lost plans.

Ok. Some more documentation. This is like building with legoes. I have an idea of where this is going, but no real plan. This is carve/cut to fit. Some 1/4" ply for the engine wood screws to bite into for the one flight. I'm leaning towards a rocket body tube to hold a fuel balloon above, and one on the keel below for the rocket engine.

Looks Good Jim , if it were me i would use machine screws with Loc- nuts even for one flight you don't want a loose engine to mess with the direction of the model Looking forward to this flight
