How many engines?
How many engines?
Okay, a serious question here. How many Cox engines should I keep? I look around my workroom and see "stuff" everywhere. It's seriously time for me to start weeding out and thinning down. One obvious place to streamline is my Cox engine collection. Actually, it's not so much a collection as a junk yard. I have so many engines and engine parts that I will never use them. I'm not a collector per se, I just see something and say, "I want it!" I'm far from the most prolific Cox engine hoarder on the CEF, but I easily have 40-50 complete engines, and parts to build 20-25 more. I'll never use them up in my lifetime.
So, how many should I keep and how many to liquidate? I figure I need to keep:
One of each .15 size engine
One of each .09 size engine
One Queen Bee .074 engine
One R/C .09 and .05 engine (with actual carbs, not the rotating rings)
One TD .051
Two TD .049 engines
Two Medallion .049 engines
One of each general Bee engine (1 Black Widow, 1 Golden Bee, 1 Silver Bee, 1 QRC, 1 Texaco, etc.)
Three Babe Bee engines
Three Postage Stamp engines
Two Horseshoe Engines
One Spook engine
One Thermal Hopper
One Space Hopper
One Space Bug
One each Ranger/RC Bee/Dragonfly
Two Pee Wee engines
Three .020 product engines (because I like messing with them)
One Little Stinker .020 engine
Two TD .020 (because I have two)
Two TD .010 (one to run and one to keep NIB)
One Beaver engine
One Rhino engine
Accessories - I'll just keep what I have "just in case"
I think that about covers what I think would be a basic "need" list. That still leaves me with plenty of engines to liquidate if I can bring myself to let them go. What do Y'all think?

Re: How many engines?
Mark, this is something I've contemplated for quite some time. I'm faced with a similar dilemma. I have so many, I don't want to count them. It's difficult if not impossible to part with them. However, if someone made a acceptable offer, I would. This is the problem, all of my engines are control line. Control liners are cheaper than cheap and typically they want it given or they offer money far less than the items worth. Bees including TD's are everywhere.
At the swap meets I attend, I see tables of them and generally most feel they're museum pieces and they take them home every year. Ebay is flooded with parts lots and engines and only prime examples bring any kind of decency. I have sold items on the bay and discovered it's a crap shoot at best. I started one engine with a low starting price and it never took off rendering me giving it away. These engines are a part of my childhood but I don't need dozens of them. That being said, you generally need a dozen to find the good reliable runners. If you find yourself using engines .25 size and up, you'll find out quickly that the 1/2A stuff just sits. I feel the same as yourself that keeping one of each would certainly allow one to concentrate on one specific engine at a time rather than dozens of them. Just my thoughts and I wish you luck on thinning the herd.

Re: How many engines?
Bundle them Mark. Toss in a few parts for variety.
About a year ago I sold around 40/50 Wen Macs and Ok Cubs in a batch. I was amazed how many bids I got and what they went for. One transaction, one shipment, no aggravation. Beats selling them individually and boxing and shipping each piece.
But, I felt sellers remorse. I did not need to sell them and although I could sell another 40/50 I miss the little buggers.

Re: How many engines?
I would re-think this notion Mark. It's not as if they're winged-models.. which take up a LOT of room. The amount of engines you mention having, would fit in one of those "under-the-bed" plastic storage-boxes. Even an old suitcase would probably do the trick.

Re: How many engines?
WHAT THE HECK ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT
That's not that many and as Ken said you need 4to1 ratio to run /// now i have got rid of some that just pived me off to no end .. Now you could thin and reup to some newer/old / not used as much engines .> I got a case that i know i have 1000$$ in and that is NOT all by no means .. I am sorry i can't help you wit this problem of yours

I think the right amount is the amount you are completely happy with.
I'm happy with the amount I have...
but not completely

Re: How many engines?
Okay, you all talked me into keeping them. I didn't want to keep them, but you talked me into it. I hope you're all satisfied. And I'll refer my wife to Y'all so you can explain why I need so many engines.
Hmmm.... I bet that between all of us, we could come up with a great list of excuses for buying so many engines.
Eric, a Rhino engine, more specifically a Rhino 1.4, is a Cox Beaver engine that has been converted to glow power. I think it was Hobby Lobby that sold them.

Re: How many engines?
Maybe a new contest is in order. See how many Baby Bees (or whatever) you can mount on a stick, fuel up, flip start, and lean out using one battery/glow head clip before the first one runs out of fuel.

That’s a great idea! Sorta though of something similar for a EOM entry. I know Kim has had Three running simultaneously on his “Board of Engines”. Or was that Bored of Engines?? Or, get a pit crew trained on refueling and see how long you c@n keep them running!

Now that's given me an idea for next years car competition
I have a 1/18 scale 32 coupe body and a spare cox chassis. I could put a bank of cox engines on that and call it the Spruce Deuce

The generated subtitles are great. It switches between "music" and "applause" most of the video.
I think it is rathere accurate.

Bill, your engine display case for your Fox engines that you attend Brodak's and swap meets is just over the top cool. I can just stare and talk about that stuff for hours. Ken
