LWS 3 with a Pee Wee

LWS 3 with a Pee Wee
I made this model years ago, one of the first ones that I created, and I flew it electric for a long time, until I had a less than ideal landing, and the firewall to which the electric motor was mounted to came off.
This gave me an idea to use a Pee Wee that I had lying around and here are the results:

The airplane this model is made to look like is a Polish observation aircraft from the WWII era: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LWS-3_Mewa not dissimilar to the much more well known Westland Lysander.
The wingspan is 55cm (22in) and the weight is 115g (4oz). It uses two 3.7g servos.
Haven't flown it with the glow engine yet, but as soon as I will, I'm gonna make sure to share a video wit you guys.

Re: LWS 3 with a Pee Wee
I LIKE IT! The Pee Wee looks right at home there! Have you done any fuel/oil-proofing to the model? One area of concern is the hatch above the wing. Oil could get in/under there.. and into the interior of the fuse. The hatch-block itself appears to be bare-balsawood. Some sanding-sealer followed by clear polyurethane should do the trick. A light-misting of clear polyurethane aerosol to the entire model would give a little more protection from oil.. where it had previously been an electric-powered model. Test a small/inconspicuous-area before spraying the whole model though.

Re: LWS 3 with a Pee Wee
It is an unusual model but does have an appeal , yes i agree with Roddie need some fuel proof or ti want last long!

The entire front of the fuselage up to where the squadron marking with the wasp is, including the canopy is sealed with epoxy. I am indeed a bit concerned with oil finding its way into the inside of the fuselage. On the other hand, the engine sits pretty low on the fuse, with just the head poking out, so maybe it'll be alright. We'll see soon enough.

Very neat looking little plane there. I really like the color.

Re: LWS 3 with a Pee Wee
Thanks NEW 222 ,
I'm just getting use to posting pictures ( with help from my wife ) . I'll get some other pic's up soon .Not allot of freak flite stuff on here . I noticed that your birthday 9-15 and mine are the same except I'm 30 years older .Flying sites are getting hard to find and it's a 5 hour trip to Muncie , the AMA site . I guess that is progress at work ...

The colour is not historically correct. It should be khaki, kind of greenish-brown, all I had to choose from was green and brown, so I went with green.NEW222 wrote:Very neat looking little plane there. I really like the color.

I love this picture. It's from a military airplane exhibition in Paris, around 1938. It's interesting how long the exposure time was - you can tell by all the ghostly figures around the plane.

The model flew today:
After some flights, the rubber band holding the wing struts failed, and the wing folded in a tight turn.

Re: LWS 3 with a Pee Wee
What a shame.
I can't figure the constructed wing at the root of the full scale. Visibility maybe. Fix it, strengthen the root and fly again.

If you mean why the chord of the wing is smaller near the fuselage, then yes, it's for visibility.
Sadly, the fuse is torn and the landing gear is destroyed, so this one's probably going to the bin. It was a very old airframe anyway, one of my first builds. The PeeWee will power one of my next projects.

Seems a shame to trash it, it looked to fly really well, or you made it look easy.

Re: LWS 3 with a Pee Wee
Ron if you look back that plane is for rubber band model / stick and tissue very light , i am thinking as hard as it hit and fuse broken would =alot of work to get back to where it was .

It remands me of that plane that lost its wings in final scene of The Blue Max.

Yes, it was a good flyer while in it's prime, but it was already an very tired airframe, and I thought about retireing it even before the crash. The accident just sealed it's fate.
