Hub For Large Splined Crankshaft Needed
Hi there. Sorry as I know this had been posted before somewheres and cannot find it, but does someone happen to remember what drive hub I would need if I wanted to convert my car engine to run with a propeller? It has a large splined crankshaft. The engine came from a Cox car if that helps know what I need. Thank you.

$4.95 currently from Matt at Ex Model Engines. Bernie doesn't show any.

Thank you. I knew I saw it somewhere here before, but had no luck finding it. At least I now know what I need when I fix up the engine.

EX was working on the tapered cranks not splined

Maybe you could open the hole in a drive plate and press it on
I see Jason used an .09 drive plate
or you could change the crank to tapered

That's the one I referred to in my last post, not the tapered .049 one.

Thank you for the opinions and suggestions. I am glad you had brought up opening up a driveplate, as I was wondering myself if that would work. I would think if one did it carefully, it can be done as it is soft metal. Or even possibly making one from aluminum as I had made a tapered one before. Going to play around with it and the ideas over the next while and see what I can come up with. Great fun, little projects. Gotta love them.

An .049 drive plate that’s drilled out will work if it’s hole is center drilled correctly. The drive plate will be smaller than the face of the crankcase nose. I used the Medallion .09 drive plate as the spline is the exact size. I turned it down on the lathe to match the crankcase size. I also added a brass washer to take up crankshaft end play on the one engine in the linked thread.

Thanks for chiming in here Jason. That is one thing I read is that you had turned it down with a lathe. I unfortunately do not have one, now would I even know how to turn one on.... Anyways, thanks for your opinion on drilling out an existing backplate. I may even hunt down a piece of aluminum and try something on my drill press for fun in the spring. Heck, I made one for a tapered engine already, once, and seems to work, so I have absolutely nothing to lose. On the bright side, I will always have a piston and cylinder set as a spare set.
