Cox Fuel Tank Tip

Re: Cox Fuel Tank Tip
Looking at that picture: I cannot visualize/understand what those two added pieces of tubing accomplish. Yes, moving the pick-up internally to the outside of the tank, but the added tubing???????

Friend these aggregate tubes and in that arrangement, allow you to fly the inverted model without spilling or losing fuel from the tank!

Actually it is to let the tank breath so it can still pull the fuel , if you turn the engine upside down it will cause an air lock. Some people also put a fuel tube around the bottom of the engine and just cut a slit (opening ) in it to do the same thing .

Re: Cox Fuel Tank Tip
When upright the fuel fill nipples are above the fuel level in the tank, so it won't leak out. When inverted the openings in the extension hoses are above the fuel level in the tank, so it won't leak out. Air can still vent in the hoses either way as it isn't effected by gravity like fuel is.
Hope that's simple to understand.

Here's an example using a "tee-fitting".

For some reason, maybe were just insane but we play with diesels in the winter. I have never been able to one flick a diesel unless it's been running for minutes. You just can't keep enough heat in them and they just cool off too fast. Generally we preheat using a torch when one gets stubborn. We also set them on fire pouring a little lighter fluid on them. A dual benefit as you get to warm your hands at the same time.

It's misspelled in that 1955 Aero Modeller article Phred. Persnickety is the correct spelling and means fussy.. making total sense in the article's context. There is a word; Pernicious.. which means very harmful or destructive. (Webster ref.)

Persnickety used in US English, and pernickety used in UK English according to Cambridge dictionary.

What should have been written is; "When worn in the bore, a diesel can be a bitch to start in cold weather.." This would be understood perfectly by most of us.

Yep, it's a good word. In the dictionary, "Persnickety" should have a picture of a 1/2A engine included next to the definition, Lol. I'm glad we could help expand your vocabulary, Kari. Maybe you can spread it all across Scandinavia now. It might go viral and get included in the next edition of the Finnish dictionary,
.

Cambridge Dictionary: persnickety
Interesting, I am learning Spanish (took Spanish I & II at the community college Summer & Fall, III is only available in Fall at Eastern NM U, have to wait until Sept. But I made up for it by taking a jazz ensemble class on sax at ENMU.

Word Spanish is quisquilloso
Span¡shd!ct translation: quisquilloso
Con los años, Roberto se convirtió en un viejo quisquilloso y malhumorado.
Over the years, Roberto became a persnickety, grumpy old man.
I thought it interesting, the word malhumorado: mal = bad, humorado = humored, malhumorado = grumpy.
I am thinking in theory that one is now down to about a little more than half tank before flying inverted. Then the centrifugal force has the fuel against the outside of the tank. Special venting with the fuel line(s) allows air into the left refuel nipple.getback wrote:Actually it is to let the tank breath so it can still pull the fuel , if you turn the engine upside down it will cause an air lock. Perry and the Pernickets would have made a great name for a late '60s Brit pop band
Not to be confused with Bob and the PerSnickets, a bluegrass band from Kentucky
It must be a seldomly-used word because honestly I don't think I have ever seen it before. I have read most John Steinbeck novels, every Philip Marlowe story, all Sherlock Holmes books, about 90% of Kinky Friedman's production, many books by Tom Clancy, some Stephen King books and many others, but never run into that word.
Another one that I have learned here is "Cantankerous". Thanks for that too
"Bees are persnickety, Tee Dees can be cantankerous".
Definitely sounds more civilized than "Bees are a bitch to start and Tee Dees can be nasty"

I, for one, come to the forum for the banter and interesting off-tops, as much as for the engine stuff.

The float bowl on a two-stroke MX/Off-Road bike is vented in a similar fashion.
