Cleaning Engine with Dawn PowerWash

Saw a advert for “Dawn Power Wash” new spray and wipe dish detergent. TV add shows grease and grime melting away on pots and pans. Just like Popiels Pocket Fisherman, I had to try it.

Instructions say wait a few minutes for stubborn stains, I left it for 20 minutes and lightly brushed off the softened castor oil. It’s not as clean as a overnight soak in a crockpot of antifreeze, the engine is still stuck castor tight. It did melt away the old castor oil on the exterior, just like pots and pans, does what it says. Maybe another spray and soak would get off the small amount of leftover spots off.
I’d give it a “3” out of “5”, as it does help wash away dirt and grease, but it cost about the same as a gallon of 100% anti freeze. It might be a replacement for 409 cleaner as a after flight fuselage and wing cleaner!

It's a start Rene, like I say "The first layer".
I was going to make a nasty comment about that engine the first time I saw it - Shot at and missed, crapped at and hit. But I held off!
Simple Green concentrate works well. I used it as a follow up to my P-40 engine boil. Engine A/F boil, SG/tooth brush, alcohol rinse. Spray with Rem oil.
Bet that engine looks great when you finish it up. The backplate looks like it retains most of it's color.

My two cents worth, I'm lazy I use Gum Out carb and choke cleaner, works like a champ!!! Try it I think you'll like it. Mark

Easy off oven cleaner works good on that baked on crud. I know it removes baked on bug guts from chrome motorcycle headpipes!

I use Dawn Power Dissolver to clean my engines. It removes castor oil varnish fairly quick but I only leave it on for about 5 to 10 minutes and then I rinse the parts with water and using a heat gun I quickly dry them. After that I lubricate the parts with oil to avoid corrosion. I the engine parts are not lubed soon they will corrode. Also wear gloves and eye protection. I also hit the engine head with scouring powder and a stiff toothbrush to finish cleaning between the cooling fins.here is a pic.

If it costs the same as a gallon of antifreeze, I would look elsewhere. My old Dawn Power Dissolver was $3, and the Dollar Tree LA Totally Awesome concentrate is $1.25. They work fine, the LA is gone now and the industrial formula is a bit more corrosive I think. Check the MSDS to be sure. Simply Green I have not tried. Even a soak in methanol gives a fairly good result as is carb spray, acetone etc. I have used the antifreeze in the crock pot, but stopped, as I don't like the heat and the extra time it takes. The Powerwash seems OK, not outstanding from the pics. $$$$

Didn't they pulled Dawn Power Desolver off the market years ago?
It was my favorite cleaner until I found out about the AF Crock Pot method.

Cleaning engines with sonic cleaner and sonic cleaner soution

I use a concentrated solution cleaner for my ultrasonic tank. 10% cleaner to a gallon of warm tap water.
The cleaner come inn a gallon jug and it's called Master Stage Cleaner 2020.
I set my sonic cleaner to heat up the solution to 130°F.
With the sonic cleaning and the very hot solution, it frees up the engine gunk and does a nice job of making the engine look new.
engines looked good but were gummed up and would not turn (before)
After sonic cleaning -- look good as new!

So far Ive found WD 40 works great. softens the caster oil almost on contact, you can just blow off the gunk,doesn't seem to affect the anodizing and after soaking over night seems to help break loose stuck heads and cylinders. and NO water = no rust.

I use a Sonic myself after cleaning so many engine that was taking more time than i wanted I purchased one But i use simple green /water mix / lot cheaper and works . It also w/heat gets the gum from the crank bearing /shaft ( usually best to turn it a few times after it loosens and redip)
