yes , I sprayed it with Windexticomareado wrote:Also, you really need to get your engine mount set up with blind nuts in place before doing the other stuff I mentioned. If in doubt about balance, go a little nose heavy--much easier to add tail weight.
Did you apply the silkspan wet ? Minor wrinkles can be dealt with (usually self-correct) in later coats of clear dope.

Looking Good Joe !! I think its 3 coats of dope in all that needs to bee applied (been awhile ) And some light very fine paper sanding (600G) at least, bee sure to wipe it down before applying next coat to get rid of the debris .

Re: Tribute Shoestring build
The silkspan is going to need butyrate dope on top as nitrate is not fuel proof. Sig Supercoat clear is high shrink which will tighten up the wrinkles better than the nitrate. I personally would have at least 2-3 more coats of butyrate sanded in between prior to color. Sig Supercoat colors are low shrink dope which will slow the shrinking process down.

When you do use butyrate, don't puddle it in any intersections, ( fuse joint, stab joint ). It can form a blister which isn't easy to repair.

Looks good to me! Don’t sweat the small stuff. It’s gonna get scratched, oily and knocked around if you are doing it right.
You might want to add the vertical stab though

Re: Tribute Shoestring build
For a model this size, 5/8 oz. is more than adequate with steel lines. If your flying Spectra, you can reduce your weight to a 1/2 oz. I'm not a advocate of tip weight boxes. I find them to be more harmful then helpful in sport planes like these. In a mishap, the entire box can eject out of the wing doing some damage. I glue the tip weight generally nestles in between two intersecting areas and surround it with additional balsa. I take lead weights and flatten them paper thin and trim with scissors. I don't take a hunk of lead and just glue it in. I keep golfers lead ribbon with me which is a roll of thin lead. If I need more, I trim it, bend it in a U and install it on the outboard tip. Later on, I can weigh it and install into the tip if needed. To insure it stays in place, I bring packing tape with me and place a clean strip over it with the surface prepped with alcohol prior.

Re: Tribute Shoestring build
Hi Ken yea I never used the weight box either this is a old thread I just ran across I didn’t notice the date back the old shoestring didn’t have a weight box and even in the planes with it I generally do the same just glue weight on outboard wing. What caught my eye was the picture of the shoestring and the silkspan job It l don’t know if it’s the quality of picture or what but it almost looks like it’s Shellac and on nice and thick.

Re: Tribute Shoestring build
I haven’t flown it yet . It has some hanger rash from the move. I also wish I used monicote . The dope I used was old and gave it the dark look. I ended up painting it yellow . I’ve sense squired another one and will do a better job on it . I am planning on flying it this summer though.getback wrote:I know my shoestring never got flown the first thing was the Enya .29 ! , i don't know if its completely broken in but it was a PIA for a 13-15 yr. old without a elect. starter then I silked it and all done , then the control arm inside the wing came loose / off ?? Good I was just going to offer you a Fox 35 I have some older ones but with very little run time I was going to do the same. You might find with the longer lines the bigger plane is easier to fly, more time for corrections.
