I can't Bear it Empty I can't Bear it

Post  rsv1cox on Sat May 02, 2020 6:59 am

Yesterday:

I can't Bear it P1010251

This morning:

I can't Bear it P1010253
I can't Bear it P1010252

I have developed defenses against deer eating my tomato's and mice getting into my garage but there is no defense against a 350 pound bear with a taste for bird seed. Thinking back I remember about six bird feeders that have succumbed over the years. I have game cam movies showing a boar bear (male for you city fellers) on his back legs shoving similar feeders over.

This one is fixable however. Several have not been.

I can't Bear it Empty RIP Yogi

Post  Marleysky on Sat May 02, 2020 9:09 am

We had a bear wandering around the “Woods” in our neighborhood for the last couple of months. My next door neighbor called from his Florida residence and let me know the Bear set off his security cameras on the back porch a while back. A Facebook neighborhood group page had a number of posts with sightings. Poor Yogi met his demise in trying to cross 4 lanes of Interstate express way.  A lot of people wanted the “killer” of this bear to be punished for killing their “pet” bear...The police and DNR  treated it like any other wildlife/vehicle death.

That would do it TL. Smile

20/25 years ago I would have popped him in a minute. Deer too. Couldn't do it today, gone soft in my old age.

Yeah,  Ma Deuce, makes a heck of a racket.  AHC has done a few pieces on it.

Got it back up.  Hot melt glue fixed it fast, until the next time. Sad

We've had good luck keeping bears out of the garbage by pouring vinegar over it. Maybe you can find a way to keep the scent of vinegar around the feeder. I don't know how the birds would react to it.

Sad, justice by preferences and impulses versus common sense.

I'd be more concerned that the motorist and others weren't seriously injured.

Probably not a way to stop it from happening apart from shooting it. Is there a way you can have local authorities trap and relocate it?

Trap and relocate would be better than this happening.

Have to be careful, no telling how bears may react when they have had enough.

DNR only traps and relocates nuisance animals. Yogi had not committed any “crimes” other than wandering thru the populated neighborhoods, no dog or pet chicken attacks. He did knock down numerous backyard bird feeders. Although they did admit there was a noticeable increase in “drive-by”  human visitors to any reported locations of yogi sightings. So sad to see him taken out like that, but they say it would have been just a matter of time before a Human/bear interface occurrence wouldn’t be good for either one. The news reported that there was no injuries to either the driver or the Commercial truck that struck the bear.

West Virginia game laws state that you can take a nuisance bear anytime on your own property.  In the photo above taken from my kitchen window just to the left of the center divider there is a bear disappearing behind a tree.  He had wandered around my back yard for awhile so I went out on the back deck to take a look.

About 20 yards away he stopped turned around and looked at me.  Unimpressed he wandered away.

If I had a bear gun it would be my Remington model 8 in .35 Remington, enough to take down an elephant if placed properly.  Introduced in 1905 by John Browning it became the Remington model 8 in 1911.  Semi automatic and recoil operated it had a unique barrel within a barrel design where when fired the inner barrel and bolt rotated rearward locked together picking up the incoming round.  Offered in four Remington calibers plus 300 Savage I had them all.  Later with minor changes it became the model 81.  Both were take-down designs.

I can't Bear it P1130010

I can't Bear it P2060027

Remington touted it as a bear gun and advertised it as such.

I can't Bear it Reming10
I can't Bear it P1010257
I can't Bear it P1010256

If I had shot it, which I wouldn't, I would have to dispose of the remains, no easy task.  Better to let him roam around knocking down my bird feeder giving me something to do on these covid-19 days. So far as to relocating, I live way out in the sticks. This is where they relocate bear to.

The model 8/81 is a pleasure to shoot.  Recoil operated and the unique design absorbed some of the recoil.  A pleasure, but the ammunition then and now is expensive.

Thanks guys.

The model 8 was one of the firearms used to take down Bonnie and Clyde in law enforcements infamous ambush. Pictures of it leaning against the bullet riddled Ford taken at the time.

I'm back to checking to see if the bird feeder is still standing before I reach for my coffee cup in the morning. Going to last until they go into hibernation this winter. Sad

Speaking of Bonnie and Clyde

I recently watched this flic on Prime or netflix

The Highwaymen is a 2019 American period crime drama film directed by John Lee Hancock and written by John Fusco. The film stars Kevin Costner and Woody Harrelson as Frank Hamer and Maney Gault, two former Texas Rangers who attempt to track down and apprehend notorious criminals Bonnie and Clyde in the 1930s.

twas and excellent movie IMO

George, I gotta say, I'm not getting either of your two cartoons.

I can think of more appropriate labels for the first one rather than Zimmerman.  Ryan Zimmerman is a popular player for the Washington Nationals; and regarding the second one, I can't connect anything like that occurring in any Scandinavian country, but seems there was a mass shooting at an island off Denmark a few years back. Some disgruntled guy with an axe to grind.  Too many of those these days.

Zimmerman though may be a stand-in for my bear.  Shoot first then...………...
