Too late for you Kim, I am afraid you are a lost case. No hope...... Nice Sportsman though, is there any way to truly date the engine? Did they change anything over the 59-65 span? I would like to know when mine was made.

My two Dannels/Sitter Books only give a little info on them...that they were manufactured from 1959-1965. And..."A variation of the Sportsman used in the Comanche Model has a longer needle valve and plastic spinner."
Maybe Mark, Mudhen, or another of the bunch has more info. My dial-up is running slow tonight, so I couldn't efficiently surf the .049 Collectors Site.
I'm sure some more info is gonna surface.

Hopefully,
I need to get me one of them there books!
Anything I know is either from this forum or Martin's site.
I definitely don't have the commanche version and I think I have one large bypass port in the cylinder and nothing else.
Haven't seen much from Mud lately......

Yeah,
BOTH of them are great! I my have to get new ones because, months after I got them, I STILL pack them around whenever I think I'm gonna be stuck, waiting somewhere!
The Cox Book almost makes me tired...imagining ALL the effort and passion it took to design and manufacture all these engines, their off-spring, mods, and accessories !!!
Like I've said many times, a few years ago, I just THOUGHT I had a good knowledge of these engines...but I didn't have a clue !

I thought about buying it, but every time I think about how it's the same price as 3 quarts of 1/2a fuel, I stop.

True, but fuel gets used up, or can go bad if it's NOT used up....but these books sit nearby indefinitely, and just KEEP ON providing great times !!!!

Well, that's not the full story either...
I don't think there was a dedicated high compression version like it is for the .049 engines. Instead for the .020 all the early heads were knurled and had an internal conical shape, while the later ones are are also conically shaped internally (with approx the same compression as before) and not knurled on the top.
The later .020TD where all delivered with un-knurled heads, as far as I know...

Here are some pictures of the two heads, the internal dimensions are identical as far as I can tell.

Kim,
Does your Thermal Hopper have the old narrow plug or the current larger one.
The first year or so they were being produced (1952-1953) they had a smaller plug, then Cox switched to the larger plug that is still current. Smaller plugs are VERY scarce.

@Kim, I can't believe deja vu!
Only 11 years later, recently I got my Sportsman .15 and .049 Thermal Hopper within weeks of each other!
This is so uncanny! Who's next?
