Nice catch, that one went right by me. The tank and muffler are very hard to find.

Re: Bucket-O-Cox parts lot
That is the 4th Mercedes tanked engine I've seen in the past couple of weeks (loose from an actual Mercedes car...). At least that engine looks to have the original muffler, and hopefully the correct cylinder.
I picked up this one a couple of weeks ago:
(picture from the listing)
Was going to post about getting the broken needle out of the backplate, which I did get out.
Here's the 3rd Mercedes tanked engine I've seen: https://www.ebay.com/itm/COX-049-MODEL-AIRPLANE-ENGINE-WITH-VENTED-TANK/324363464492 Still available!

Re: Bucket-O-Cox parts lot
A little over 10lbs of goodness arrived today. It’s going to take a while to go through all of it.
Just digging in the crankshaft tub I found brass babe bee crankshafts. Unfinished TD .020 and TD .010 crankshafts that are part way through the process. Most of a RR-1. A TD .09 spray bar with a brass needle valve. Unfinished .09 spraybar. Cut down TD .09 crankshaft. This was maybe used in the TDRC .09. Unplated babe bee backplate. And the holy grail of parts are 2 Olympic rear drum valve crankshafts that have the extended pin.
I suspect this lot came from a Cox employee possibly worked in the R&D area.

Re: Bucket-O-Cox parts lot

Looks like one hell of a lot!
I can't say I've ever seen or heard of brass cranks for these engines. Drum valve Olympic cranks, that you actually needed! What's the chance of that?
Re: Bucket-O-Cox parts lot
Well, it looks like Christmas came a bit early this year! Brass crankshaft sounds interesting. I wonder what the difference in weight is between the standard crankshaft and a brass one is? Maybe the reason they did not use them? Even seeing the new unfinished and started crankshafts is also very neat. Thnaks for sharing pictures of your goodies with us.

My eyes went over each individual piece gathering in the experience. Years ago I made a similar buy, maybe about half the size of yours and remember going through the lot and making up engines from parts. The leftovers kept me (and some others here) in Cox parts until this very day. Happy times.
Your speculation about the source sounds right. I would ask the seller. I was never shy about getting the backstory of many of my Cox products, asking the sellers for the history. I have a loose leaf binder full of previous owners comments regarding my Cox Mercedes tether cars, some are, picked it up at a garage sale but many contain interesting personal stories.

Re: Bucket-O-Cox parts lot
Jason,
Looks like some missing parts that you needed for your Cox RR-1in this collection of parts?
I needed a replacement back plate for my Cox RR-1 because the top mounting ears were broken off.
Fixed it like you did on yours. Drillings out a Baby Bee (metal back plate) with the hole slightly undersized
then reaming the hole with a long taper reamer to get the fit nice and snug so no fuel or air would leak in.
Here is my Cox RR-1 with new back plate (from Cox Baby Bee)

Taper reamer set:

With this lot of parts there has to be an original backplate? There was one (or two) in the photo?

Lucky guy there!
If you run across a piston ( or piston/cylinder) for a Medallion 15, let me know.
I have a Medallion 15 without a piston.
Would really appreciate it.

Great stuff,
Those Olympic cranks are for sure the prize in the lot. Very cool.

Re: Bucket-O-Cox parts lot
Brass would have been while setting up the machines that produced the cranks. This is very common.
If you intend to use any of those cranks be sure to check that they have been case hardened. If soft, they are conversation pieces. I would guess that many of these parts are out of tolerance as the number of in process parts would seem to indicate. Without prints how would you know other than compare to production parts?
A great score regardless.

Re: Bucket-O-Cox parts lot
Found this strange engine with spacers and then a drive plate. I assumed some type of threaded adapter with a standard crankshaft. It’s actually a long solid one piece babe crankshaft. Also found one slightly longer. There is also an unfinished early diecast crankcase with a casting defect. Definitely R&D stuff.
I contacted the eBay seller and he stated it came from an estate sale. Didn’t remember who it may have been.

Wow. Some more very neat stuff there. I really like the cut-aways. They always look neat. Would also be interesting to find out what they were thinking or what they were planning with the engine with the extra long crankshaft.

Get's more interesting all the time Jason. A Cox gold mine.
Too bad about the sellers dead end. I sure would love to know the source of those. Had to be someone associated with Cox.

Re: Bucket-O-Cox parts lot
When I saw the long cranked Bee I started to envision a mid engine P-39. I have no idea about the rolling dies, it would make sense if the needles were rolled.
Really neat stuff!

Just thought. Maybe a dumpster diver. There has been some discussion about that previously on the forum.
