Cox Engine of The Month
Refurbishing Enya 049 / 06 / and "one" .10 engines from "junk" status
Page 1 of 1
Refurbishing Enya 049 / 06 / and "one" .10 engines from "junk" status
I have bid on these "junk" engines from a Japanese Auction site (Yahoo Japan Auction).
Cheapest one was about $37.00. The highest one was $76.00
Then you have the auctions fee for winning ($10.00 - each engine)
Brokerage fee from Buyee (for International bidders - 8% from final bid cost)
Then (here is the sticking part), since it is considered "an engine" it is restricted from International shipping.
So, you need a "friend" in Japan to ship it to "his" domestic address.
Then your friend can ship the parcel to you as "parts" to the USA.
Of course, my friend in Japan (Hiroshi) accepts PayPal. So I pay him the shipping cost from the seller to him,
then the shipping cost from Hiroshi to the USA.
Here are the photo of the "junk" engines from Japan ( these engines are like seeing Cox engines here for sale)
In the upper right corner of the above photo are "two" Enya .049 engines.
Below are those "two" engines refurbished --- thanks to some parts from BoB Brooks. (shtterman@aol.com)
Major problems with these "junk" engines are, being gummed up and tying to be forced to turn without heating them up.
So you'll see plier marks on the prop washer (driver) an other places.
In the "junk" photo, you can see the 4pc piston is apart ( missing the "C" clip that held it together - I'll make my own "C" clip to replace the missing one.), The piston was stuck in the cylinder and the prop washer had very heavy plier marks on it. Which I will get a replacement prop washer (driver).

Now onto the other engines.

Re: Refurbishing Enya 049 / 06 / and "one" .10 engines from "junk" status
Well, here is a photo of the engines(in their boxes) that I have reconditioned for the last three months or so.
I'm reconditioning an Enya 35-4C in the tub.
No instructions, tools, box, etc. Just the engine.
Bid on it for and won it for little less than $168.00 on a Japanese auction site. It was marked as "junk"
Little over $30.00 for shipping. (ouch!)
Engine was stuck, nothing turned.
Using heat to loosen up the caster oil and cleaned it up.
It needed new bearings (got replacement from Boca Bearings) and new gaskets from Ken Enya.
Just have to do the gearbox and the timing. I found a instruction sheet online for the timing.
I have saved it as a PDF file and have printed it out which I will store with the engine.
I see that Bob Brooks has a box for sale that should fit?
