Cox special 045 tether car question
Hi all, I just acquired a cox thimble drome special 045 tether car. Its missing the front axle, rims and tires. The front axle thread size is my question. It looks like an 8-32 thread on the axle from another car but its not. Can someone tell me what size die they used on the axle ends. All the pusher cars have some type of rivet fastener to hold the wheels on.

Re: Cox special 045 tether car question
Roger that on the nuts. I have the two axle nuts from another car and they go about one turn on the 8-32 thread. I ordered an 1/8-40 die, Received it today, and that doesn't seem to work either. I have some 3/16 round stock to make an axle. Just trying to keep her stock. By the way Beautiful car!

Re: Cox special 045 tether car question
well it is an 8 and not 32, that leaves 8-36 or 8-24. I think 8-24 but have nothing now that size to try. I'll find and 8-24 tomorrow and try it.
Thanks I restored it a few years ago and one of my favorites.

I guess 8-24 doesn’t exist or oddball, I’m stumped.

Do you guys have a pitch gauge? They usually reside in good tap and die sets.

Re: Cox special 045 tether car question
The major diameter is .161" I would try 8-36 next but have no tap that size. The problem with a pitch gauge is only two threads on the end of axle and my eyes aint that good anymore.
They were made in 1950.

Re: Cox special 045 tether car question
Thanks for checking. The 0ne size I haven't tried is an 8-36. Don't have that die. I did try some metric dies and ran into the same situation. Like you said there's only 2 threads so it's hard to pitch gauge it. I'm going to try and order an 8-36 die. I'm not sure what else to try. The wheel are on the car now with the 8-32 threads. I screwed on the stock nuts until they stopped hand tight. I could leave it like that but not my work ethic. Hard to find some of the parts for these cars.

Re: Cox special 045 tether car question
I took the front axle out of my Cox Special and took the following measurements
Axle overall length 4.52”
Between axle nuts* 4.32"
Axle dia 3/16”
Thread dia 0.1633"
Threads per inch 36
* axle nuts finger tight
Thread measurement of No 8 UNF from Engineers Black Book. Very handy book

Tpi major effective minor minor Tapping clearance
Dia dia dia Ext dia int drill size mm drill size mm
No 8 36 0.1640 0.1460 0.1299 0.1339 3.50 4.30
Looking at those measurements I think you’re on the right track Rosco, No 8 -36 UNF.
Also, the Prop Rod had the same setup before they went to the horseshoe circlip.

The bonus is the front axle is about 5¼” long so can be cut down to suit.
The part number for the hub nuts is 910 (pkt of 4).

Keep an eye out for them or a Prop Rod chassis, they turn up occasionally.

Re: Cox special 045 tether car question
Thank you crankbndr and devenz For all your all your great Help. I didn't have too many choices left on die size. I ordered the 8-36 yesterday. Think i"ll order the tap today. I have a prop rod axle but I didn"t want to cut it so I purchased the 3/16" stock. Now I can make lots of axles! I do enjoy working on these cars. Can't afford top shelf ones. Have to make them that way. You all try to have a great new year! Thank you.

Re: Cox special 045 tether car question
That model looks good polished, don't know if they came that way. Every time I make a definitive statement about Cox I am usually wrong.
I enjoy fixing them up also and don't care if not factory. Sometimes an old beater is worth fixing up for my shelf queen collection. I don't run em.
Welcome to the party pal!!
I did a Champion also,

Good we can still find parts either repro or new old stock. I have bought more than one model just to get parts to make one complete.

Re: Cox special 045 tether car question
Thanks Getback for the Mcmaster linc. I ordered the metric 3mm round slotted nuts. Hopefully I can run an 8-36 tap through them so I can put my Prop Rod front axle back together. I used the axle nuts on the 045 special.
