Cox special 045 tether car question
Hi all, I have a cox 045 engine case I purchased recently. The crankshaft is really seized. The cylinder, piston and planetary gears are removed. It looks like the crankshaft and flywheel should come out as a complete unit from the planetary side. Is that correct? Nothing appears to want to move. Can't seem to get it to move yet with soaking and heat. Just wondering if anyone has taken the crankshaft out. Not sure if it"s an old castor oil siez or overheat no oil seize. Help!

Re: Cox special 045 tether car question
The only one I have was stuck big time, the hardest to free up of any of my Cox engines. I did not dissemble it other than the glow head and tires. It took multiple light oil and heat cycles with a heat gun. Just when I thought it would never free up it did and spins freely now. Good luck.
PS I think antifreeze will darken the cast case.

Re: Cox special 045 tether car question
I will try heating the flywheel. I was heating the case. It's been soaking for a week in ATF and acetone mix. I wasn't sure how the flywheel attached to the crank. I can see now it's splined from your description and pics. I did a couple coolant boils and cools. no progress yet. I will try the alcohol and heat procedure you have recommended. It's a tough one. There quite the engine as for design. A neat little package. I purchased the case on e-bay just for some spare parts. Lots of parts missing, but the price was right. I may work on it today. Will give an update when it turns. Thank you all!

Re: Cox special 045 tether car question
OK, I put my little Torch On the flywheel this time, put a 1/4" dowel with a hole in the end of it and she started to move. Had to do this a couple of times because it was so gummy. flushed it with some acetone, blew it out, oiled and it spins like "new" What is the best way to remove the flywheel? Is the gear on the end of the flywheel part of the flywheel? I see splines on the crank. Not sure how to remove the flywheel safely. Some engineer put alot of time and effort into this little motor.
