Wanted Shuriken 1/2A engines

Post  BlackWidow Thu Apr 22, 2021 9:22 am

I did a Shuriken search and nothing came up.... so hope I am not being redundant.

Looking for Shuriken parts - specifically, a backplate.  Airplane

Also, would like some advice on the physical difference between the Shuriken .050 and .061? Huh...

THANKS

Thanks.. Yes I have seen this.
Short of engine disassembly and careful measurements, there still seems to be no way to know the engine displacement?
The engine evaluation (by Mike Billinton) in Septreflight does not provide any information on determining engine displacement.

I think the last post has a sheet of the specs....the .061 was rear exhaust with different bore and stroke

Doug Galbreath used to work on high speed free flight and racing engines he may have a part or two. He retired but still has his web site up
http://www.the-printer.net/DookCat.html

Place and ad in flying lines flea market as many from north west had these for speed events, Paul Gibeault comes to mind

In a bit Ken Cook here on CEF will see your post and add his insight.

THANKS.. Funny enough, I just purchased this Shuriken MkII (gold) from Doug Galbreath's son, Howard.
It may have been run, but the condition is like brand new.
I have asked him to look through his parts to see if the backplate can be found.
Short of that, also trying to find another source for one.

You may be right on the .061 being the FIRE configuration, but in all my reading on the Shurikens, that isn't clear to me.
My interpretation is that the .050 and .061s were both available in either FISE or FIRE, but I could be wrong ? Shocked

I don't think there were any .061 in gold. The gold engines were made after Baldwin and Van Arsdall split (marked "VE"). Before the split they were marked "BV".  By removing the head, the bore is easily inspected. .399 is just smaller than a typical Cox .049. The .441 bore will be visually obviously larger than a Cox .049.

I had a Shuriken for a while, but didn't take any notes on parts or the design before I sold it.

Fred Baldwin posted on RC Groups some time ago. You can do a search for Shuriken and see what comes up. I spoke with him a few years ago and had probably a 1 1/2 long conversation with him. Fred had mentioned that certain parameters were met between him and his former partner Jim in which that no more engines would be sold and certain parts to be disposed of. Fred mentioned he kept a few parts. He might have what you need however, his track record for providing parts isn't a glorious one. There were two version backplates. I have no spare parts. I owned 4 Shurikens, 3 being .049's and one .050. I kept the worst .049 and still own the .050 which is essentially new minus the box. Mine are all side exhaust engines. The same pin spanner that removes the head button also removes the backplate therefore if you do locate one, you will need the tool.

Wanted Shuriken backplate

BW: I do have spare Shuriken backplates for sale, but they are a backplate ONLY and not a backplate combined with a radial mount.

Do let us know on your dealings with Fred Baldwin. As Ken Cook alluded to, Fred leaves a lengthy trail of broken promises.
He still owes me for bearings that I prepaid $100.00 for in good faith. Four phone calls over four years have produced nothing but empty promises & no refund of my money.
All I can say is exercise great caution if sending this individual ANY money. You have been warned. Good luck.
