The Wood Shovel

The Wood Shovel
Don't know, maybe I'm hearing the sound of distant drums. But lately I have been gathering up special things from family and the past and centralizing them. Latest is this old shovel. I remember my Mother in my old torn jack shirt using it in the garden behind our house. "Victory Gardens" they were called during WW2 when everyone was encouraged to grow their own vegetables and be self-sustaining.
I'm sure it was passed down to Mom from my grandparents. I didn't get it until after my mother passed away some fifteen years ago and I treated it, well like a shovel. It's been hanging in the garage for years but occasionally left out in the weather after use.
Looked at it this morning and decided to clean it up. Knocked the rust off but left the cement lodged in the crevises that Dad left there many years ago. Covered the whole thing with Howards Wax, made a hanger for it out of the same old wood that I made the tether planes out of and moved it into the basement. It's in good company, many of which are from the same era and the same house.

Re: The Wood Shovel
Nice Job Bob!! A shovel deserving of display and respect. They don't make 'em like that anymore. Proud enough of the workmanship they put their name on it, twice! We had one very similar to yours, that came with the first house we bought. Probably did service in the Victory garden of the previous family, Grandma turned the victory garden into a Multiple Bursts of Color Flower garden taking up half the backyard of the intercity plot of land. When we moved in we found many small babyfood jars with dried seeds/flowerheads labled with flower name and color of blosom and year saved, down in the basement pantry. That part of the yard was way overgrown and infested with weeds but still put on a nice color show the first spring we lived there. The shovel did duty for a few more years in my wifes possession her main row digging tool. It did finally succumb to a broken neck, due to being left out in the yard over winter. None of its replacements have had the feel, balance or power it had with the rivited foot rests and comfort grip wood handle. Kinda miss it.

Oh, the stories that shovel would be able to tell if it could talk. A very neat old piece of history there.

The wood shovel… they must have had a real brainstorming session to come up with that name. Looks right at home with all those beautiful rifles. As mentioned, they don’t make them like that anymore!

Re: The Wood Shovel
It occured to me that I still have that old jack shirt, a constant companion during deer season.
One of the few things that Mom didn't toss out when I went in the Navy, probably because she used it too. I have a picture of her wearing it, hanging wash out on the line. Elbows out and one shoulder. Minor miracle that it survived, but I remembered that it was in a little used closet upstairs hanging on one of my wife's fancy coat hangers.
And kept going. Visited all my tool chests removed and added an interchangable screwdriver, crate hammer, fishermas Delier, 6' rule, beer can opener, a compass, and a patch from my fathers golf hat. Put them all in a tool chest that my Dad gave me on my 16th Christmas. All momentos from my growing up in Raymond NH and my Dad's retirement.
I think I'm ready to move into "check-out city" now. Mark will wind up with all this stuff, good that he respects the memory.
Thanks for bearing with me on this trip down memory lane.

True. Just check out that handle. I did use the same old wood for the hangar that I used on the tether planes. Didn't clean it up either, used as found. Compliments the shovel.

Simply amazing. I love to hear of others old trips down memory lane. Thanks again. And the shirt. Simply amazing to still have it, and it looks to be in great shape as well.

Very VERY cool Bob!

Re: The Wood Shovel
I had to bring the old wood shovel out of retirement, out of necessity. Nothing available today is as strong as to take the punishment of digging into this hard West Virginia clay soil.
I'm redoing the back yard walkway for the second time. The Boxwoods are just taking over despite annual clippings. I have to move the stepping stones out eight inches to make up for it. The flat sharp edge of the shovel helps. The hard work of digging is done, now I have to set and level each individual stone. Other tools get left out, I least I keep the wood shovel under the eves.
I have no idea why I originally posted this under the Redneck zone. Nothing dangerous about the shovel, but the hoe has separated the heads of a few Florida Rattler snakes from their bodies. Not necessarily my nature, but we had a couple of small dogs that loved to chase things.
Perhaps Jacob could move it over to "Off topic."

The shovel is a beautiful old tool Bob…. Its wear and tear plus its patina makes it that way… Must feel very special using it after reading its history…. Looks like you’ve treated it in someway?…. Has a nice dull glow to it….Walkway job looks nice, But not an easy job for sure….

Howard Feed-N-Wax Robert. Home Depot. Protects without the mess. I have used it for years.

Re: The Wood Shovel
Walkway redo.
The back aching part is mostly done, I stll need three more bags of pea gravel but no more digging so I can retire the shovel again.
The wood just sucked up the Howard wax, this soil just drys things out including hands. Took three applications before I was happy.
West Virginia functional, not Florida beautiful. Landings get reboarded and extended and I'm going to paint them Cabin trim Green!!!! I bought way to much cabin paint and I'm not going to let it go to waste.
Back home. Mom, Dad, and the Grandparents that passed it down would be proud. But to think of the years that it stayed outside in New Hampshire's weather it's surprising that it survived.
