1/2 A - CL Handle

1/2 A - CL Handle

Life’s been busy but I found a little time to fab up a control handle for my SM 23 project…. It has a 1/4” balsa core and 1/8” mahogany sides from an old desk drawer divider….There’s an aluminum tube in the handle to house the the .025 music wire lead out and to be able to adjust….. Finished with the same polyurethane I used on the plane…. Hopefully over the holidays I can find enough time for a test flight…

Compared to my old handle for .35 size planes …. The little one weighs about 3/4 oz… The big one about 6 oz…

NICELY DONE! Those are great looking grips along with the satisfaction of making them yourself.

Where is the wrist strap? Just incase you fall down or loose control?
It's a requirement when doing competition (AMA safety requirement)
Good looking handle though.

I see so many guys flying without a wrist strap on.
With all the lawyers out there, it good to have a wrist strap for safety.
My E-Z Adjust handles have them ( because I flew AMA comp.)

For 1/2A with as little pull as there is I don’t bother with the thong on those. Especially for sport flying.
However, if you have a problem with grip strength or you tend to get dizzy then a thong would be recommended. Also if you fly in a public place.

Re: 1/2 A - CL Handle
I had a .40 in a slow combat where the lines went slack and it pulled out of my hand even though I hung on good. Glad I had the thong. Didn't save the plane though. My shoulder hurt for a few days. When flying the racing events at the Brodak meet a few years ago, they did not want the thong used. At the Clown final with 4 in the circle,(bad idea) I needed to pass underneath twice and the thong would have caused a big mess. Over the years I have seen a few fly aways with the handle going with the plane.
