I run my sparkers on glow fuel. Don't put glow fuel in that clear fuel bowl, it will melt. Coils can be pretty expensive these days. I know a lot of my club members use a stove fuel from Walmart and some sort of 2 stroke oil which offers impeccable runs.

Your "clean up" work looks really good. Keep us up to date on your progress in getting it running.
Re: O&R 23 & Brown Jr
Good Advice, Ken, I would have never known that the early plastic used in some of these is incompatible with glow fuel, synth oil or the nitro component of it. I guess it goes to show how early these elementary plastics were used, wonder if it is a type of polystyrene.Ken Cook wrote:I run my sparkers on glow fuel. Re: O&R 23 & Brown Jr
Here is some information for you from a group of "old tiers" that run "sparkies"
http://www.antiquemodeler.org/
They are SAM (Society of Antique Modelers) and they run all different spark ignition engines.
Here is some info on electronic ignition system for your engine which is better to ues than the old condenser units.
https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?4062335-Larry-Davids-TIM-4-Transistorized-Spark-Ignition-System-with-Davidson-Coil
The person who posted it is Mike Myers and he has a good collection of O&R and Brown Jr. spark ignition engines.
Here is Larry Davidson's website to get info on his ignition system and he can also help you on the type of fuel/mixture that you'll need for your engines.
I have competed against Larry in contest with his sparkies and he is a constant winner in that class.
Here are two of my "sparkie" engines which I use Davidson's ignition system and the fuel/mixture he recommended:
Colman fuel and 80 weight oil (mix)
Arden .099 on the left and on the right is the McCoy .098 --- modified for spark ignition.

By the way, Mike Myers is out in California where you are.
There is a main group of SAM members out there in California, maybe one of them live close by you to help you out?
Or they can have you bring your engine to the flying field (around there) to show you?

Thanks!
Just had to clean them up a little from them not being used for years.
That is all that was done.
The tag on the McCoy says it ran at 10,200RPM on an 8-4 prop.
Last time it was run was Jan. 29, 2010 (1-29-10)
Other side of the tag give the fuel mixture on it. (Future reference as my brain gets older)

If you want you could use this ignition modulehttps://www.stirlingkit.com/products/rcexl-high-voltage-cdi-ignition-for-me-8-1-4-32-spark-plug-single-cylinder-gasoline-engine?variant=39867174486208 Or this less expensive model https://www.stirlingkit.com/collections/internal-combustion-engine/products/hit-miss-gas-vertical-engine-spare-parts-ignition-accessories This one works with three double A battery or only two AA work just less run time like 2h long only
Its posible To bypas the hall sensor and triger ignition wit point y tink
But the more expensive top one is exactly made for that one with point

Nice Sparkers, I know you have to get them running first then…Are you planning to fly them?…. Never owned one but think they are interesting….

Re: O&R 23 & Brown Jr
find em
clean em
test bench em
then try to fly em
i've got too many in between steps 2 & 3. Need to get em moving in the process
sparkies intrigue me, cause I have absolutely ZERO experience with them, but like the idea

Yes it's different but quite simple I find the settings of a diesel more complex with the two we have to adjust two things, one the compression wit diesel and the other the timing advance of fire on old sparky engine For the dignition system you can simplify using one of the two systems that I am suggesting even here it is indicated for 4 strokes or hit and miss. It work wit two stroke engine

Re: O&R 23 & Brown Jr
I look at it this way >as a mechanic early in life and put my fair share of point/condensers in and adjusted timing about every time , this should bee more fun than expected , The one .30 size i have takes a 14"/6 woodies that i did score at a swap meet should bee a kicker .

The .25 HP Brown Junior, an amazing engine, turning a 14x6 prop at 6,000 RPM in flight, could power an 8 foot wingspan FF cabin.
Try that with the same HP .15 glow turning an 8 inch propeller at 14,000 RPM. There's more to the science than HP alone.

Re: O&R 23 & Brown Jr
Just a little note on Woodys. The website only shows a handful of parts that are available. You need to get the catalog of parts to see the thousands of parts that are available. Most of the parts he manufactured or had manufactured and are drop it.
I believe Woody passed away and someone keep the website up and running.
