Half A, Glow Clip

Half A, Glow Clip
Hi All,
I cannot find, or remember last using/loosing it, my old 1/2A glow clip. (15yrs ago?)
Was not perfect, but it worked.
My battery/starter/adjustable power panel with a long lead still works.
It was a Cox product, I think, but not sure,
Yellow plastic, with twin forks that contacted Cox glow plugs nicely. (even Norvels )
I am asking for advice.
Rather than re-inventing the wheel...
What do you use?
I have brass and copper, wooden clothes pegs, etc. to play with.
And I remember,
Check the glow,
Before fueling up...
Don't flood it.
Then start flipping... (Close the piston to prime...)
Technically,
Cox engines need an electric start...
I appreciate all the wealth of knowledge here,
Thanks,
Dave

Hi, there, have you tried https://coxengines.ca/field-gear/cox-glow-plug-clip-oem-style.html ? Is this what you are referring to?

Re: Half A, Glow Clip
Hi All,
Yes pman11, that is the one, thanks.
Somehow with a a right sized nut/Nyrod tubing and solder, I made it work.
Worked, good, not great.
Hi, getback,
Thanks for the offer, I will learn about PMs one day. (people will regret it !)
I am thinking of making an 'Alligator Clip' type.
Basicly, a big clothes peg, that can grab any glow plug.
Positive goes on top. Negative grabs the rest of engine.
When the engine fires/runs, it will fall off...
There are very many designs I have seen/tried.
If it is able to short out and catch a field box on fire,
I am interested.
To go the other way !
Amazing expertise here,
Thanks,
Dave

Wow...that was "only" just over a year ago. It feels like ages to me.

Re: Half A, Glow Clip
Hi jim,
Thanks, I will go through that link....
This is the type of clip I remember and would like to make:
https://www.modelshopleeds.co.uk/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=35343
As soon as I get one made,
I will stumble across another box,
And will probably find 'missing' 1/2 A stuff I had...
Take care,
Have fun,
Dave

Re: Half A, Glow Clip
You may want to look up Prolux, Prostar or Turnigy. https://www.rcnz.com/categories/tools-and-lubes/glow-starters/texon-glow-plug-clip/ I got the Turnigy for the Fora that uses the Nelson plugs, and it will work on the Cox with a little bending. It was about $5 a couple years ago but the supplier left the country. Of course there may be something with Cox International or EX. I found the yellow Cox clip worked good with the Cox after adding thicker wire, but would just fall off the Fora and other heads with the Nelson plugs. Very frustrating.

Re: Half A, Glow Clip
Hi aspeed,
I am gonna be in enough trouble running a Cox .049 locally here,
Never mind one of those 'screamers' ! ! !
( plus...they scare me ! )
The yellow 'twin forks' worked good good for me.
I thickened the wire and made a fake glowplug that fit in my regular glow lead.
(right sized nut/yellow nyrod tube/blob of solder/ CA...)
I still might find it...
Hi duaneh,
Exactly what I want to make... Thanks !
Just like I used as a kid 50yrs ago...
Hooked up to a 1.5V battery, bigger than a pop can.
Liked it because when the Cox fired, and ran, you could needle it...
And the clip would fall off on its own, or with a slight nudge...
Got all the materials,
Fun project for me...
I like this forum,
Thanks,
Dave

Re: Half A, Glow Clip
Hi Dave, I use the exact variety your describing. There is actually one you can still buy for $10. It's bu sullivan called the "1/2a glow klip."
If your in Alberta Canada, "the balsa dust factory" hobby shop out of Lacombe has a bunch on the shelf for sale. Jon has some pretty epic stuff. It's near 100% controlline focused.
I can letter mail you a standard cox one too if you find your in a bind. Send me a note.
In my laziness for test stand runs I just press a standard subc glow igniter down and flip. It does not hold itself on as it's designed for the os8 type, but it does make a circuit if you just hold it on manually.

Re: Half A, Glow Clip
Hi layback,
I am in the suburbs, west of Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
Most clubs here these days are mostly electric.
(not that there is anything wrong with that... )
They are amazed how 'ancient' small glow engines are just as good.
Noise around here has always been a problem.
My Cox .049s are just as loud as any modern electric ducted fan...
So it will all work out...
I have not ventured NW past Windsor/Sudbury yet...
Give my respects/love to fellow MAAC flyers out that way...
Take care,
Have fun,
Dave
