Thinking Lesson Learned

Post  Yabby Thu Feb 09, 2023 2:27 am

Couple of days ago went flying early morning. Beautiful morning the sky was blue as blue from one horizon to the other, the gum trees allready had that haze around them from the gum / eucalyptus starting to bubble out of them and the sun was allready intense and starting to hurt when not shaded. Before flying I took careful note of the where the wind was going as if wanted to practice going inverted and back from the top of a loop and I like to level off the top with a crosswind and still have some crosswind when I come back over. I had it perfect! as I levelled it off I was 100% dead smack in the middle of the sun and couldnt see a thing without seeing spots even for about 30 seconds or more. Its obvious what happened to the plane. Rolling Eyes No! Luckily the TD survived and from the crash I could salvage the wing of my plane.

I think this is why I used to read about the germans in WWI flying with the sun at their backs! So the lesson is, You need to know where the winf is and where the sun is, if the sun is bright enough where you are to prevent you seeing from sometime after looking straight into it. And I had good shades on but only welding goggles would have worked on a day/morning like that in Oz. Old Bugger

I can always find a new way for me to crash,................ Oh well, fly again tomorrow morning and be more careful and wiser this time as it looks like being only about 30 C or 85 F so should be nice morning. sunny

sorry to hear that you lost site and crashed , you may want to use a hat with a brim also with sun glasses .. Sounds hot for first thing in the morning ,, can you smell the eucalyptus trees when they heat up ? I worked at a candle making shop for a few years and we made the eucalyptus leaf candles , man that was some strong stuff that lingered in the hot air in there .

Sorry to hear about your crash Yabby… But as quick as you built you’ll have it or another one in the air in no time at all!!

Yes, the sun has claimed many… I second getback’s suggestion of using something like a baseball cap to start with, Plus sun glasses you mentioned…. Mine is mostly RC but when the plane goes into the sun the transmitter goes up to shadow my eyes and just hold last setting until I see it again…. Maybe your free hand could do similar for CL?…. I realize things happen faster closer to the ground but just a thought…

Goodaye Eric cheers Thaks for that. Thumbs Up Ive tried a hat but it sort of gets in the way when my heads going back fowards up and down following the arc of the plane and things. No, it was just a dumb mistake I have learnt from. Ive had it in my eyes before but never like I did this time and I had shades on. I was watching really hard as I wanted to level off from a loop inverted and with a wingover or normal loop if I cop a bit of sun I can look away for a moment and its all ok, but not going inverted. my mistake. Lessone learned to work out position for manauveres better. Thumbs Up

Yes, it was a hot day, ended up about 42 C - 108 F and when I was out in the morning it was all ready about 36 C 97 F in the shade. Yes, you can smell the gums at times but Im probably used to the smell, but what is most amazing when it gets really hot, dry, no humidity and no breeze is there is a haze of the gum/eucalyptus fumes around the trees that you can see. It shimmers. On days like that if you are near them you can really smell it. Also what makes bush fires so dangerous over here in Oz. The eucalyptus fumes are extremely flamable and you get fires where its burning super fast across the tree tops and you can get fireballs from embers landing in trees and the fumes burst into flames. Its very dangerous when it happens, but not enough of them around where I am. Its all been cleared for crops.

Anyway, main thing is if you gonna crash, learn something from it. And I have very definately learnt I need to understand where the wind and the Sun are. Lol. sunny cheers

Thanks RDW777 Thumbs Up The loss of a jigger is not so bad. I worry much more about the engines! and the TD was fine and I ran it back at home no problems. So thats a good crash. TD ok, lesson learned. cheers Yes, I need to learn to be ready to shield my eyes for that moment from the sun, like you do with your Tx or look away for a moment. It probably does happen quicker in CL, but you still have to learn to manage it, as if the sun and the cross wind line up you will have it happen. I have found with half A, it really matters to have the wind correct when doing manauveres. With my 15 Enya and OS 15 it doesnt matter so much. The other thing is I really dont like hats on my head when im flying and a hat wouldnt have helped as I looked direct into the sun as thats where the plane was.

Nope, Yabby just manages to complete another one of the 101 dumb ways to crash. lol! Always been a crasher even when I raced bikes!, no shame, no brains my dad used to tell me. lol! He was allowed to say that as he had to fix them for me after I crashed them. Laughing Laughing sunny cheers
