S.M.A.L.L. 2023 "Here We Go"
It's still a ways away, but thought I'd start a thread for the up-coming Summer S.M.A.L.L. Fly-In on June 1-4 (Thr-Sun), 2023, at Plumerville, AR.
There's a thread on RC Groups that will be cranking up more and more.
https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?4283653-SMALL-2023-June-1-4-%28Thr-Sun%29-2023-Plumerville-AR#post50464969
Here's the description of the event from that thread:
323 McWilson Road, Plumerville, AR 72127.
SMALL is for RC, Control Line, and Free Flight models of all types powered by single or multiple electric and fuel motors of individual .25 cu in equivalent or smaller (CL fuel engines may be larger), rubber, and even hand launch. Model rockets of solid fuel and air/water types have been flown. Innovative and different from the ordinary models are welcome.
You can find threads on past SMALLs going back to 2001 in the "SMALL Events" thread: https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/show....php?t=1460283

5 hours, 22 minutes...347 miles. First weekend in June. Hmmm. I need to make it there some time, preferably before I die!

Hi Kim,
I'll be there in Spirit... Appreciate all the pictures/videos...
3500km and 33hrs round trip +border crossing time is way too much for me.
What is the furthest anyone has travelled there?
Dave

I'll have to check, we've for sure had folks from each coast and Texas. I'll ask on the RC Groups' thread!
There are a bunch of videos on You Tube, and I've got quite a few on my channel if you search "wintersportster".

Well, there may be a hose somewhere, but I'm sure David wouldn't mind if you used Lake S.M.A.L.L. !!!!

I got this note from Troy (Tee Bee) on the hotel accommodations he has used:
"I’m not sure about “preferred” but several of us have stayed at the Days Inn in Conway. Decently clean and decently priced. Next door to several eating establishments."

I tend to get a bit gamey smelling after a day. The pets don't mind, but the lady folk and some guys might. Is there a KOA campground nearby or a truckstop with pay showers?Kim wrote:Well, there may be a hose somewhere, but I'm sure David wouldn't mind if you used Lake S.M.A.L.L. !!!!GallopingGhostler wrote:If one camps at SMALL grounds, where do they shower?

Hey Dave,
Here is the reply from the S.M.A.L.L. 2023 PAGE:
A few years back, we had a guy travel to SMALL (one of the FARM club events) from Alaska, from a place well north of Anchorage. We have also had several from California and at least one from the Ottawa. Canada area, just a couple of years ago.

Kim,
I made out my S.M.A.L.L. checklist last night and I think I have my plane line-up finalized. Now I just need to get everything cleaned up and test run so I can practice and be ready between now and then.

NOPE!!!
You just show up, pick a spot (David may direct you), and plunge into the fun!
AND...speaking of "Plunging" I intend to bring the Lazy Bee's floats...hopefully NOT for a "plunge", but for some fun flying from "Lake S.M.A.L.L."
So maybe bring something to make some waves!

Mud Dabber gets ready for Summer S.M.A.L.L. 2023
Mud Dabber gets a slightly smaller engine for this year's S.M.A.L.L.

Nice work, Kim. in your on-the-ground camera, the slower flight of the Mud Dabber on a sport Schneurle .25 reminded me of my single channel days, not as fast but still majestic.
Good thing there is Schneurle technology with more power than the older cross scavenged. Engine is an OS Max .25 FSR?

Yeah, it's a .25 for sure, but not sure about the model letters. Several years ago, my big brother bought a chunk of the estate his airplane mechanic was selling (maybe wanting to keep the guy in good humor?), and it included this and several other engines.
It ain't no power house, but Sky Tiger Field has a nice smooth runway!

Re: S.M.A.L.L. 2023 "Here We Go"
That is good Kim, that the field has a decent runway, and you are blessed to receive these engines from your brother. Reason why I asked was I have a Magnum .25 R/C, which appears to be a copy of the OS FSR series except with ABC technology. (FSR had a lightweight Meehanite iron piston and steel cylinder.)Kim wrote:Yeah, it's a .25 for sure, but not sure about the model letters. I gather that the Mud Dabber is a little on the heavy side making the OS .25 a bare minimum in power needed. But, it amazingly still flew well considering. Flying reminds me of motorcycling. The worst flight is better than the best day of work.
At our elevation of 4,300 feet, the larger engine would have been a given.

How is the camping site for mosquitoes and other flying bugs?

Hey Mark,
I don't remember bugs being a problem at this site, though, two or three years ago, we were being attacked by man-eating gnats at the Farm Field Club over by Wrightsville.
The new field DOES have a good-sized lake, so mosquitoes might be a problem, and like all fields down there, there's a need to watch for fire ant mounds as you walk about. The Sky Tigers are pretty aggressive about exterminating them though.
So, some good-quality bug repellent might be a good idea.
