Coffee pot quarry loco made in caernarfon. Garret monster seen behind, double articulated power bogies...
Double fairley ( two chimnies ) waiting in Porthmadog to take us to Blaenau Ffestiniog.
Slate quarries and mines in Gwynedd, formally caernarfonshire and Merionethshire ( originally Gwynedd ) particularly Blaenau Ffestiniog,
Blaenau quarries originally used pack horse to barges to ships to export finished slate.
Gravity tramway trains to Porthmadog, trucks returned to Blaenau by horse. Steam trains took over as much quicker return up hill journey. Double fairley , two chimney locos with articulated bogies for tight narrow gauge curves.
Interesting engineering and history.
Some more to come.

Competition
Picture from book, Festiniog narrow gauge railway loco trials of 1870.
See emergency brake men on empty slare wagons on return journey to Blaenau Ffestiniog, one by cutting in the far distance..
See passenger and freight wagons also.
The train was stationery performing a " loaded hill start" which it did successfully.
Poor horses eh ....but they had a ride back down in a dandy wagon....seen film of horse on platform decending steep long incline !!!!
Hope you enjoy the pictures....

Re: Modelsmodels
I had a friend at my last job that was from Wales….He was going home one summer for vacation and he asked me if I wanted him to bring back anything special…. I told him not really, If anything just something that was very common to where he was from…. When he got back he gave me this piece of slate in the photo…. He said there was a mine near where he grew up and was a big part of the local economy…..So there’s my little piece of Wales…..
Nice old locos and history…. Good to see them still going…..

Re: Modelsmodels
Hi Rich, Fascinating subject matter! I love learning about steam locomotives. There's so much important history to discover. Just one week ago today; I met a "friend of a friend" who has a model "steam launch". He brought it with him.. and ran the steam engine "dry-dock" for us. My recent interest in model boating was the catalyst for the meeting/demonstration.
The boiler-water was preheated in a microwave oven to speed-up the process..
The fuel used for this demo was solid-type
But the builder (Dave O.) says that he's run it on "hand-sanitizer"....... (fuel for thought...)

About a 10 mins walk away is the famous Dorathia quarry with its Cornish beam engine and pump house. Been inside but not downstairs below the cylinder. Some valve gear is missing, hopefully stored in the building somewhere.
Slate, does it change colour dramatically when wet !
A few varieties of slate in the Nantlle valley.
Nice marine engine and launch...
Near caernarfon. Is Glyn Llyfon estate, mansion House and estate workshop, having a De Winton stationery steam engine driving saw mill etc ..
Sir Fred Dibnur, a steeple jack and steam buff, attended to the chimney, and engine. Very good TV programs made by Fred, a man of the people.
I have a model stationery steam engine in the shed awaiting *doing up*, which looks just like a De Winton.
You guys aware of "museum of iternal fire" near Aberporth, below Aberystwyth on the west Wales coast ?
Robby Coltrain did a good TV documentary about engines. behind him was a loch, in his hand was a peewee. After talking about engines, he threw the peewee over his shoulder....I just know he would have waded into the loch to recover the peewee....
I am expecting a peewee in the post today.....
