Cox .020 PeeWee/TeeDee prop-screw
Cox .020 PeeWee/TeeDee prop-screw
It's a size 3-48 UNC machine-screw. Now for my story; Up until this past week, I'd never owned a model engine smaller than .049 cu.in. I'd never even "held one" in my hand.. then I got a letter from my brother from another mother.. "Eric" (@getback) telling me that something was coming in the mail... but he didn't let-on as to what it was..
A PeeWee!!!!
There's something about a handwritten letter... So it just needed a prop-screw.
I have a stock of 3-48 X 1" length cap-screws (black oxide coated) so I cut a few to the required length. This engine's crankshaft bore had a depth of close-to 3/8" (10mm).. but I found that the 3-48 threads weren't tapped nearly that deep. Just-over 1/4" or maybe 7mm.
My screw kept running-out of threads before the propeller would tighten up..
89
I didn't have any flat-washers the correct size (which naturally bothered me.. ) so I came up with an unlikely adaptation. I have a stock of 3-48 lock-nuts.. so I decided to drill-out the threaded (steel) section to receive the body of my 3-48 cap-screws (.098") and then drilled-out the plastic (lock) part of the nut to receive the screw-head.. (.159") which provided a consistent bearing-surface on the prop-hub.. when snugged-up.
That's gonna' work just fine.. and I like the look..

Re: Cox .020 PeeWee/TeeDee prop-screw
Good for Eric filling a void with a nice shiney Cox Pee Wee engine. And a great fix on the prop screw. Winners all the way around.

Roddie, the prop screw fix looks real good, almost scale like, looks like that .020 has potential for a Cox Engine of the Month winner.

Re: Cox .020 PeeWee/TeeDee prop-screw
Bernie of COX International sells socket head screws of the required dimensions for engine mounting purposes, and I replaced the slot round headed stock screw on my COX TeeDee020 with a socket head screw, that allows better tightening of the prop than the stock...I do not have any screws with American thread sizes here in our hardware stores..
https://coxengines.ca/mounting-screws/cox-049-engine-mounting-3-48-x-1-2-socket-head-screws-3-4.html
Only 1/2" long instead of 3/4", so will not work with a spinner, but just long enough for the hubs of props for 020 engines.

Re: Cox .020 PeeWee/TeeDee prop-screw
Got some .020 items coming from Canada. Now that I have this engine; I'm going to want to try to support its longevity. I feel a "click when I flick".. when turning-over the prop.. that makes me want to check the piston-rod's ball/socket joint. Makes sense to have that tool to reset it if needed. I already have the .049 and .09 versions.
Here's a list of what I ordered.. which I figured was good to start with...
Oh yea.... regarding the Cox Apache (autogyro) rotor.. .... It's to try on my "Rodd-O-Gyro"... someday.. (why not?)

Pee Wee rebuild
I got my Cox .020 parts from Cox International yesterday.
I had a feeling that the piston-rod/socket joint might need a reset.. so I disassembled the engine to get a better feel.
There was a little end-play.. and I generally reset it for ZERO.. but not to the point of binding. I now had the tool.. and used it today. I'm happy with the result.
The reed wasn't sealing.. so I removed it to inspect.. and there was a slight crease; enough to prevent it from sealing properly.
Not easy to see without a magnifier...
I used the new fuel tank-service kit.. which came with a Mylar reed (star-shape) and new circlip. Incidentally; the circlip that was in the engine is .0195" dia. wire. The new circlip wire is .0235" diameter. I decided to use all the new parts that came in the tank service kit. The reed is seating correctly now with the new parts. I'm glad that I bought the tank service-kit because the engine had 2 tank-screws that were shorter than stock.. and also were "round-headed". They're all nice and new now. The backplate to tank-bowl seat is in good shape.. as is the backplate's "overall" condition.. so I don't expect to see any leaking.
I like the silver tank bowl. Makes me want to polish/buff-out all of my 5cc (.049) bowls.
I installed X2 head gaskets because I will be using 25/35% nitro glow-fuels. Compression feels very good.

Hey man , I am glad you went ahead in to it , don't remember going in to that one but probably did at one time .
I think it would have run but sure didn't mean to sent something hard to run !
Or maybe its just a test for your skills
I know my eyes have been messing with me lately and tring different contacts and all ,but i got a appt. coming up and I will tell them about this problem .

I didn't really have anything Cox .020 related until you sent me that engine Eric. I was anxious to "open it up" once I received the .020 related items from Bernie.. (mainly the piston reset tool...) so going through it just seemed like the logical thing to do.
New CEF member Loosespinner99 (Dave) is rebuilding his "new to him" Pee Wee .020 and I brought up/posted the creased-reed issue/photos partly for his benefit.. but also for others to understand; how a very slight deformity can prevent its proper function.
It's a nice little engine Eric.. and I feel very lucky to have it.
DON'T feel sorry about anything man.
