My latest doodle...

My latest doodle...
I’ve never wanted to build a P-51, as there are so many out there and it’s just an “also did one” for me. About the only one that I was remotely interested in doing is the Thompson Trophy racer, Beguine. Maybe I’ll do that one someday since it’s totally different from the standard P-51 you see. But in 55 years of modeling, I’ve never built a Mustang.
For some reason, I started thinking about doing a P-51 using the Cox foam wings that were given away back in the 70’s. I’ve got a couple of sets on the shelf doing nothing. Now, I’m not partial to the bubble canopy models. I’m partial to the P-51A model. So, last night I sat down and drew out a P-51A to use the foam wings.
One of the things I do not like about the FW-190 plans that came with the wing cores is the way the wing root ribs are designed. It seems too easy to glue them in slightly off from one another on each side making the wings twisted. So I decided to do something a little differently. Instead of a T-shaped stub spar, I’m doing a full length I-beam spar, sorta. I’m doing a through-the fuselage cutout for the spar, and indexing dowels front and back to keep the root ribs aligned.

Wow, looking fantastic. I like where your heading with this one. More cricut action. Can't wait to see how it all comes together.

Well, I have to make up some parts on the Cricut for a one-design indoor contest that my CL club is doing, so I went ahead and finished up the cut file to do the parts for this from 3/32” sheet.

***SIGH***
I was out doing errands today and stopped to get some wood for this project. I drew this up to use 4" wide sheets of 3/32" balsa. Unfortunately, I have previously bought up all the good balsa from the local stores, and there's no good stuff left. I'll have to go try the stores farther out tomorrow...
Of course, I could just make the fuselage out of 1/4" balsa, which would actually cost about half as much for the fuselage, and which I probably have on hand. But, a) I could never match the precision of the cuts from the Cricut, b) I enjoy the catharsis of sitting down at night after the wife goes to sleep and draw something up on the laptop, and c) it's just fun watching the Cricut Maker cut the balsa sheet.

Well, I drove to the other side of town and checked out HobbyTown and two Hobby Lobbys. I managed to get two decent sheets of 4"x3/32" balsa. Just the gas burned makes this an overly-expensive production. But, ehhh, it's a hobby. I'll do some cleaning up and then start the Cricut setup. I did find a 6" sheet, so I'll do another drawing to see if that's a better route to go.

Yea... you can't really shop the web for the quality/grade of balsa that you need.. and even if you could; you can't guarantee that it will be delivered undamaged.
I'm anxious to see your progress/methods with the Cricut machine Mark. I've been wanting to buy one for a long time. If you could explain some of the details here; I'd really appreciate it.
