Cox Engine of The Month
Duende V model from RC Model magazine 1983.

Duende V model from RC Model magazine 1983.
In 1983, if I remember correctly, I bought my first magazine in Spanish, the world-renowned RC Model. Seeing the magazine in my early days was like being in front of a shop window where the imagination had no limits, the illusion of being able to access some rc model, engine and radio was like thinking about climbing the Himalayas.
Having a clear conviction of what we naturally like helps us to project beyond the economic and this in any field, because energies will be gathered and focused on what one truly feels and wants.
I found in that magazine a beautiful model, a mix just as the author of the article describes it, of a glider and an acrobatic plane, clean aerodynamic lines and a relatively low cost for those of us who were beginning to "save" and project a model. After about 9 years, back in 1994, I built a Duende V, which I did not fly personally. A friend saw it in my old workshop and fell in love with it, making me an offer to exchange materials that really helped both of us, he to enjoy the model himself and me to continue advancing in another field within the aeromodeling activity. This is the only photo I have of that model hanging in my workshop without flying, waiting for its time to come.
That model was not built like the original, I respected the fuselage (only), but I completely changed the wing, the profile and stabilizer, based on the experience of the Cosmo .10 that turned out to be very good for learning to fly r/c, that stabilizer also had a considerable mobile surface, everything was to experiment and it turned out great.
The cockpit that I adapted was from the renowned F3A model called OCLAF 60, designed by the friend and respected aeromodeler, Mr. Daniel Falco.
My friend who kept that Duende V, was able to enjoy it a lot, since it turned out to be a very practical model due to its size and very good flight performance. He had installed an O.S. .10 or .15 engine, I don't remember, with which it went wonderfully. What happened to that model? I don't know anymore.
After some time, and in a nostalgic way with that plane, today I want to reproduce it again, this time respecting the aerodynamic profile of the original wing, also the shape of the wing and slightly modifying the incidence of the angle of attack of the same and also changing the position of the stabilizer.
According to my available time, I will advance in this nice project of yesteryear.

It looks very clean aerodynamically Mauricio…. Very much like the pattern types of the
70’s and 80’s…. A beautiful machine….. It’s nice to be able to build and fly something that was only a dream many years ago…. I know you you will do a wonderful job with Duende!!

Should move and groove well like a pattern ship, lovely project Mauricio!
What engine have you selected and wing span?

The plane is streamlined well and should fly great with you behind the controls and the building skills you have always put into your models . Bee interesting to see the end project / good start on the model Duende. The one one the wall in your work shop looks very good !

Brad, my friend, I have a Norvel .074 engine, which I think will handle this model very well. I also made some adjustments to the F1, so that I could change the engine if necessary.
The wingspan is: 1100 mm and the length is 720 mm

Thank you very much Eric!...the one on the wall I exchanged with a friend many years ago and it flew very well.
The one I'm making now will have the original wing of the plane, we'll see what happens.
I've seen that a Medallion .09 engine and a Norvel .074 with an APC 7 x 3 propeller have a thrust of 650/660 grams, that is, they have almost the same power...so I have a Norvel .074 available now and I'll install it to see what happens.

Re: Duende V model from RC Model magazine 1983.
Looking real good thank you for sharing,
The low weight Norvel .074 in conjunction with keen efforts to reduce system weight should allow
the design some potential pattern power with the right E prop.
Aug 15, 2019
Kamtechnik Turbo Plug adapter test APC 6x4E
19,864 rpm / 23.3oz thrust / .292hp - 214w / 75.2 mph pitch speed
+1,211 rpm more power than the stock Norvel plug.
Vs
Norvel Turbo Plug / APC 6x4E
18,653 rpm / 21oz thrust / .242hp - 181w / 71 mph
This new APC 7x4.1E prop is perfect with your larger plane design / weight needing max power out of the selected Norvel .074
A real chance for higher thrust levels compared to the APC 6x4E and with 4.1P to provide some enjoyable tracking speed.

Very nice work, Mauricio!!!
@Brad, are you not concerned with a E prop on a combustion engine? Will this prop not throw its blades?

Thank you Brad!, friend, for all this valuable information. I will take note. You know that my beloved country has some restrictions that the new government is currently eliminating in order to integrate us into the world. I believe that starting in 2025, some clauses and taxes will disappear and then I will be able to make some acquisitions. I hope so. Thank you!

The APC 6x4E has held up well with the Norvel .074.
All the APC E props have flown great with 1/2A power up to the TD .09 APC 5.25x6.25E / 144mph pass.

Thank you.
The grilon must be cut at a low speed, even if it is cut with a manual saw. At the same time, water must be sprayed on the saw and cutting area, otherwise it begins to heat up and become sticky, causing everything to stick together, preventing it from continuing.

Thanks for the tip..!
I'm going to copy your idea and make some engine mounts with a bandsaw.
I bought some molded plastic engine mounts recently and they are brittle garbage.

Fantastic, you can create your own designs, adapting them to each model aircraft as required.
From time to time, it is also nice to make and/or create our accessories, you learn a lot along the way.
Remember, that a saw like the one in the photo is ideal, spray with water and cut, spray again and repeat the process. If the saw is mechanical and works continuously, you must apply water continuously, otherwise, the grilon will melt, it will stick to the saw and excess melted plastic will be generated, which could cause an accident.

My friend, I LOVE to see this fabrication happening! I LOVE doing the same!!
Re: Duende V model from RC Model magazine 1983.
Nice build photos Mauricio!!…. I like the torsion bar landing gear system and the inlaid hardwood block….That’s a very aerodynamically clean design…. Will be fast and smooth….. Great for flying “big” maneuvers

I know Roddie, you are a very exquisite person in your creations, always looking for alternatives even with common materials that are easily found, you turn them into very useful elements.
Living in third world countries makes those of us who use our heads a little, always look for possible alternatives...well on one hand it is very good, since you develop the creative part, but on the other hand it is very bad, because the non-integration and the lack of basic elements, are due to selfishness, and the bad intentions of some rulers who, while they keep their people in ignorance, they give themselves the good life. But a large part of my country has already realized who is who, anyway, it is very difficult to turn the equation around, because many have also become liars and corrupt.
Anyway, part of the history of each society!

Thank you very much Roberto.
This model was designed by Mr. Juan Moreno Crespo from Spain and was made in 1983 as I mentioned at the beginning of this post. I am trying to locate the author. I contacted José María (also from Spain), a member of this forum, asking him if he knew Juan Moreno, but he told me that he does not know him. We even calculated the years. Judging by the photo in the magazine, Juan Moreno Crespo may be about 75 years old today. I really don't know and therefore I don't know if he is still active or what. In the meantime, I am still looking for him. It would be very nice to make contact with him.

Re: Duende V model from RC Model magazine 1983.
I hope you will be able to contact Mr. Crespo…Mauricio….I’m sure he would be pleased to know you were building his design from that many years ago…. I was doing a build in the RC Groups forum a few years ago of a plane that was published in 1986…. To my surprise the designer was active on that forum and interacted with me during the build which made it very special…..It would be wonderful if Mr. Crespo could see your project while you are building it
