Cox Engine of The Month
Purchased the last of any bult engines from Ken Enya
Page 1 of 1
Purchased the last of any bult engines from Ken Enya
Well, I received the three parcels from Ken Enya of the last built engines that Enya had.
Some are complete, some have a few parts missing, such as a carburetor, backplate, or some other part?
In the three boxes are a total of thirty-three engines in all at a cost of just under $8,000.00
I've checked through the engines quickly and over half are gummed up.
Found eleven with no carburetors.
Five without any needle valve assemblies.
Half of them are missing paperwork in the boxes.
Four that have what fells like rusty ball bearings (rough feeling)
And some looking pristine --- like new in the box with box ---- complete
Ken has told me that Enya will no longer be building any engines ag all.
Whatever parts they have will be for sale for engine parts only and when gone they are gone.
Seems to me like Enya is closing down for business?
Like MECOA has parts for Enya and on MECOA's website, when they are gone, they ae gone too.
I hope I can get the parts I need from my three Enya sources?
Some project work to do over the winter?

Man... You must really love Enya engines. Are they all 2-stroke?
Re: Purchased the last of any bult engines from Ken Enya
Nice haul!
I've still got a box of Enya engines (mostly used, few new) and parts (mostly new). They are mostly random parts but happy to take a look in case there is anything you need that might be there.

Yes, they are all 2 stroke engines.
In the bunch I got two engines that are for boats.
One is an Enya .09-III for a boat and the 2nd is an Enya .19-IV for a boat.
Both are new in the box.
Photos to come later?

Thanks, Matt, for the information.
Probably Ken Enya took whatever part off the engine and sold it as a part to a customer.
Maybe that is why these engines are missing certain parts?
One thing Ken Enya told me that I'll be able to get any gaskets for any engine that I need.
He probably has kept the dies to stamp any gasket needed?

Ken had the entire listing of the engines to his "special" customers.
The total price for them all including shipping was about 1.2 million yen. (1usd= 161.44yen ---in June 2024)
Ken Enya had it posted back at the start in June with many watching but no takers until I purchased them.
I'm glad the dollar to the yen was in my favor (the dollar).
During and a little after the pandemic (Covid-19) it was pretty much even (1usd = 102yen)
Best engines in the bunch are an Enya .15-I diesel and an Enya .15-II diesel (new in the box -- never mounted or run).
Boxes has mold/mildew on them and when turning the crank, they feel rough (rusty bearings?)

That is good Yen vs. US $ , I guess you can get the bearing with out to much of a problem / i don't know of anyone just cleaning them and getting by with the pits they usually have from it . I am sure you know Dan Sutterman ? from eBay that has Enya parts > https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_trkparms=folent%3Acalifornia-dan%7Cfolenttp%3A1&_trksid=p3542580.m47492.l71970&_ssn=california-dan not sure about he last name but close I think his son has been running the buss. lately .

Yes, I know about Dan.
I have purchased some parts from him in the past, after I try Ken Enya for the part 1st.
After Ken, then Dan, I try my friend in Australia (Bob Ratts --- Ace R/C Models), then Singahobby then last is R/C Japan.
I use to also try Steve Webb in England but he has very little stock and the US dollar to one British Pound is bad!
That is all of my sources for Enya parts and engines I have.

WOW!
Thanks, Coxfledgling.
I did not know that.
Last time I did any dealing with Steve Webb Models/ServoShop was about 10 years ago.
Purchased from him a few China built Mills diesels with throttled.
Before that a few Enya engines and Multiplex kits.

According to another (UK based) website, they folded due to the activities of a dishonest employee who'd been siphoning off stock. hope its not true-but these things happen in business unfortunately. What i can confirm though is that at least 3 Ebay accounts associated with Steve Webb's are not listing anything for sale since the news broke about 3 weeks ago.

Just got in the mail yesterday my November issue of Aeromodeller and in one of the articles it had Steve Webb/servo shop as a contact for the electronic DT modules.
A two-month delay from printing to when Seve Webb shop closed down is also a sad way of finding out they are gone?

two of the many engines from Ken Enya
I got two of the engines (Enya 15D-I and 15D-II) cleaned up and rebuilt.
The boxes were slightly damp and has black old on them.
The ball bearings are rusted and feel gritty.
After taking the engines apart, I found out the bearings were rusted in place.
Ordered new bearings from Boca and replace the rusted ones out in no time.
Now the only thing I have to do to is get new gaskets for both engines as when I took the engines apart, the gaskets ripped apart to where they were no longer usable.
I sonic cleaned the engines and put them back together (without the gaskets -- I'll install later)
The now look very good, like new and the have never been fueled or run either.
I'll just have to get new boxes from Ken and get rid of the moldy old boxes.
One other downside --- the paperwork that were inside the boxes were ruined as well.
Well, below is the 15D-I and 15D-II after the rebuild
Enya 15D-I
The rebuild Emya 15D-II is the one without the spinner:

Beautiful engines Mike. I wonder how they were stored, warehouse or Ken's home. Parts of Japan can be very humid. Good luck on those replacement boxes.

Very Nice ! So he has extra boxes ? I am wondering are the diesel Enya engines as much trouble to break in as the Nitro glows ?? The only down fall but once broken in long lasting performance !

Yes, Ken has engine boxes that you can purchase from him.
I purchased from him one case (10 boxes in a case) from him in the spring of this year.
Also ordered parts and gaskets as well and the parts and gaskets were inside the boxes.
I'll do the same this spring after going through the engines I just received a few weeks ago.
As for break-in differences from glow or diesel --- I think they are about the same?

Supposedly these are the engines that were left in the warehouse for many years?
They were all in boxes when they moved from the old factory building in downtown Tokyo to the smaller building on the outskirts of Tokyo where they are now.
These engines are considered defective and were not in any "good" condition for sale.
Ken did inform me of the sale that these engines have no warranty, and Enya is not liable for damage.
Had to sign a paper for the engines knowing this.
